In good weather, my friend Mark always let his yellow-naped Amazon parrot, Nicky, sit on the balcony of his tenth-floor apartment.
One morning, Nicky flew away, much to Mark’s dismay. He searched and called for the bird, with no luck.
The next day when Mark returned from work, the phone rang.
“Is this Mark?” The caller asked. “You’re going to think this is crazy, but there’s a bird outside on my balcony saying, ‘Hello, this is Mark.’ Then it recites this phone number and says, ‘I can’t come to the phone right now, but if you will leave a message at the tone, I will call you back.’”
Nicky’s cage had been kept in the same room as Mark’s answering machine.
날씨가 좋은 날이면, 나의 친구 마크는 항상 그의 노란 목덜미의 아마존 앵무새 니키를 그의 10층 아파트 발코니에 앉아있게 하였다.
어느 날 아침, 니키가 멀리 날아가 버려서 마크는 무척 당황하였다. 그는 앵무새를 찾고, 불러보았지만, 헛일이었다.
다음날 마크가 직장에서 돌아왔을 때, 전화가 울렸다.
"당신이 마크이십니까?" 하고 전화 건 사람이 물었다, "당신은 말도 안 된다고 생각하시겠지만, 바깥 저의 발코니에 어떤 새가 있는데, 이 새가 '여보세요, 저는 마크입니다.' 그러곤 이 전화번호를 암송하고, '저는 바로 지금은 전화를 받을 수 없지만 신호가 울릴 때 메시지를 남겨 주시면, 제가 거기로 전화를 걸겠습니다,' 라고 말하더군요."
니키의 새장은 마크와 같은 방에 놓여 있어서 자동응답기 역할을 하였던 것이다.
