A zebra has wondered his whole life whether he was a white zebra with black stripes or a black zebra with white stripes.
When he dies and goes to heaven he asks God the question, "Am I a white zebra with black stripes or a black zebra with white stripes?"
God responds, "You are what you are."
The zebra goes to his friends and tells them what God had said and that he still doesn't know the answer to his question.
One of his friends says, "Well, that means you are a white zebra with black stripes."
The zebra asks him why and the friend says, "Because otherwise God would have said 'You is what you is'"
어떤 얼룩말이 자기가 검은 줄이 있는 흰 얼룩말인지 아니면 흰 줄이 있는 검은 얼룩말인지 평생 궁금하게 생각하였다.
그 얼룩말이 죽어서 천국에 갔을 때 하느님에게 그 문제를 물어보았다, "제가 검은 줄이 있는 흰 얼룩말입니까 아니면 흰 줄이 있는 검은 얼룩말입니까?"
하느님이 대답하였다, "너는 지금 보이는 그대로이니라."
그 얼룩말이 친구들에게 가서 하느님이 말씀하신 것을 알려주고 그래도 자기는 자기의 질문에 대한 하느님의 대답을 이해할 수 없다고 말했다.
그의 친구 중 하나가 말했다, "음, 그 말씀은 네가 검은 줄이 있는 흰 얼룩말이라는 뜻이야."
그 얼룩말이 왜냐고 묻자 그 친구가 말했다, "왜냐하면 그렇지 않다면 하느님은 'You is what you is'라고 말씀하셨을 거야."

* 흑인들 중에는 영어 문법에 어긋나는 표현을 쓰는 사람이 많아 "you are"를 "you is"로 쓰는 사람이 있다고 함. 그러니 네가 검은 얼룩말이었다면 하느님은 흑인이 사용하는 말인 "You is what you is"라고 말씀하셨을 텐데 네가 흰 얼룩말이니 "You are what you are."라고 말씀하셨을 거라는 조크
