An attorney arrived home late, after a very tough day trying to get a stay of execution for a client who was due to be hanged for murder at midnight. His last minute plea for clemency to the governor had failed and he was feeling worn out and depressed.
As soon as he walked through the door at home, his wife started on him about, "What time of night is this to be getting home? Where have you been? Dinner is cold and I'm not reheating it" And on and on and on.
Too shattered to play his usual role in this familiar ritual, he went and poured himself a double shot of whiskey and headed off for a long hot soak in the bathtub, pursued by the predictable sarcastic remarks as he dragged himself up the stairs.
While he was in the bath, the phone rang. The wife answered and was told that her husband's client, James Wright , had been granted a stay of execution after all. Wright would not be hanged tonight.
Finally realizing what a terrible day he must have had, she decided to go upstairs and give him the good news. As she opened the bathroom door, she was greeted by the sight of the front of her husband, naked, bent over, drying his legs and feet.
"They're not hanging Wright tonight," she said.
To which he whirled around and screamed, "FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, WOMAN, DON'T YOU EVER LET UP ...??"
어느 변호사가 한밤중에 교수형에 처해질 그의 의뢰인을 위하여 사형집행 유예를 얻어내려 노력하느라 아주 힘든 하루를 보내고 나서 늦게 집으로 돌아왔다. 주지사의 관대 처분을 바라는 그의 마지막 청원이 실패로 돌아갔던 것이다. 그는 지치고 우울해 있었다.
그가 집 현관문으로 들어서는 순간, 그의 아내가 바가지를 긁기 시작하였다, "지금이 밤 몇 신데 집으로 들어오는 거야? 어디 있다 왔어? 저녁밥은 다 식었어, 그리고 난 데우기 싫어." 그리고 계속 불만을 털어놓았다.
그는 아내의 이 의례적인 말에 대꾸할 수 없을 정도로 몹시 기진맥진하여, 가서 스스로 위스키 두 잔을 따라 마시고 나서, 따뜻한 욕조에 오랫동안 몸을 담그기 위하여 몸을 이끌고 계단을 올라가면서, 예상되었던 아내의 빈정거리는 말을 들었다.
그가 목욕하고 있을 때, 전화가 울렸다. 아내가 전화를 받았는데 그녀 남편의 의뢰인, 제임스 라이트가 결국은 사형 집행을 유예받았다는 말을 들었다. 라이트는 그날 밤 처형되지 않는다는 것이었다.
드디어 그녀의 남편이 얼마나 괴로워하고 있었는지를 알게 되자, 그녀는 위층으로 올라가 남편에게 그 좋은 소식을 전해 주기로 하였다. 그녀가 욕실 문을 열었을 때, 그녀는 남편의 몸 앞쪽이 그녀를 향하고 있었는데, 남편이 발가벗은 채, 몸을 굽혀 다리와 발을 닦고 있는 걸 보았다.
"오늘 밤엔 라이트가 처형되지 않아."
그 말에 그는 몸을 홱 돌리면서 소리쳤다, "빌어먹을, 이 여자야, 좀 참으면 안 돼?"
