A rabbit one day managed to break free from the laboratory where he had been born and brought up.
As he scurried away from the fencing of the compound, he felt grass under his little feet and saw the dawn breaking for the first time in his life. "Wow, this is great," he thought.
It wasn't long before he came to a hedge and, after squeezing under it he saw a wonderful sight: lots of other bunny rabbits, all free and nibbling at the lush grass.
"Hey," he called. "I'm a rabbit from the laboratory and I've just escaped. Are you wild rabbits?"
"Yes. Come and join us," they cried.
Our friend hopped over to them and started eating the grass. It tasted so good.
"What else do you wild rabbits do?" he asked.
"Well," one of them said. "You see that field there? It's got carrots growing in it. We dig them up and eat them."
This he couldn't resist and he spent the next hour eating the most succulent carrots.
They were wonderful. Later, he asked them again, "What else do you do?"
"You see that field there? It's got lettuce growing in it. We eat them as well."
The lettuce tasted just as good and he returned a while later completely full.
"Is there anything else you guys do?" he asked. One of the other rabbits came a bit closer to him and spoke softly.
"There's one other thing you must try. You see those rabbits there," he said, pointing to the far corner of the field. "They're girls. We shag them. Go and try it."
Well, our friend spent the rest of the morning screwing his little heart out until, completely knackered, he staggered back over to the guys.
"That was fantastic," he panted.
"So are you going to live with us then?" one of them asked.
"I'm sorry, I had a great time but I can't."
The wild rabbits all stared at him, a bit surprised. "Why? We thought you liked it here."
"I do," our friend replied. "But I must get back to the laboratory. I'm dying for a cigarette."
토끼 한마리가 태어나서 자라난 실험실에서 어쩌다 탈출했다.
토끼는 실험실 울타리 밖으로 종종걸음으로 달리면서 자기가 풀을 밟고 있음을 느꼈다. 그리고 생애 처음으로 동이 트는걸 봤다. "와우, 이것 참 멋지군," 하고 그는 생각했다.
얼마 지나지 않아 그는 산울타리까지 와서 그 밑을 비집고 나가 놀라운 광경을 봤다: 많은 다른 토끼들이 모두 자유롭게 싱싱한 풀을 뜯어먹고 있었다.
"이봐," 그가 소리쳤다. "난 실험실에 살던 토낀데 방금 도망쳐 나왔어, 너희들은 야생 토끼들이야?"
"그래, 이리와 같이 놀자," 하고 그들이 소리쳤다.
우리의 친구는 그들에게 뛰어가서 풀을 먹기 시작했다. 아주 맛 있었다.
"너희 야생토끼들은 그 밖에 또 뭐하니?" 하고 그가 물었다.
그들중 하나가 말했다, "너, 저 들판 보이지? 거기엔 당근이 자라고 있어. 우린 당근을 파내어 먹는단다."
이말을 듣자 그는 참지 못하고 거기로 가 즙이 아주 많은 당근을 먹느라 시간가는 줄 몰랐다.
당근맛이 놀라왔다. 좀있다, 그는 그들에게 다시 물었다, "그 외에 또 뭐하니?"
"저기 들판 보이지? 거기에는 상추가 자라고 있어. 우린 그것도 먹는단다."
상추도 맛있었다. 그는 잠시후 배가 불러 돌아왔다.
"너희들 또 뭐하고 지내니?" 하고 그가 물었다. 그 토끼들중 하나가 그에게 좀 더 가까이 다가와서 상냥하게 말했다. "네가 해봐야 할 일이 하나 더 있어. 저기 있는 토끼들 보이지?" 하고 그는 멀리 떨어진 들판 한쪽 구석을 가리켰다. "저것들은 암것들이야. 우린 저것들과 섹스한단다. 가서 해봐."
우리 친구는 나머지 아침 나절을 그들과 교미하느라 정신이 없었다. 드디어 그는 완전녹초가 되어 다른 야생토끼들에게 비틀거리며 돌아왔다.
"환상적이었어," 하고 그는 숨을 헐떠거리며 말했다.
"그럼 너 우리들과 함께 살 작정이니?" 하고 야생토끼들중 하나가 물었다.
"미안해, 아주 즐거웠지만 그렇겐 할 수 없어."
야생 토끼들은 모두 약간 놀란 표정으로 그를 바라보았다. "왜? 우린 네가 여길 좋아할 줄 알았는데."
"좋아," 우리 친구가 대답했다. "그렇지만 실험실로 돌아가야겠어. 담배 피우고 싶어 죽겠어."
