Merv was in a terrible accident at work. He fell through a floor tile and ripped off both of his ears.
Since he was permanently disfigured, he settled with the company for a rather large sum of money and went on his way.
One day, Merv decided to invest his money in a small, but growing telecom business called Plexus Communications.
After weeks of negotiations, he bought the company outright.
But, after signing on the dotted line, he realized that he knew nothing about running such a business and quickly set out to hire someone who could do that for him.
The next day he had set up three interviews.
The first guy was great. He knew everything he needed to and was very interesting.
At the end of the interview, Merv asked him, "Do you notice anything different about me?"
And the gentleman answered, "Why yes, I couldn't help but notice you have no ears."
Merv got very angry and threw him out.
The second interview was with a woman, and she was even better than the first guy.
He asked her the same question, "Do you notice anything different about me?" and she replied: "Well, you have no ears."
Merv again was upset and tossed her out.
The third and last interview was the best of all three. It was with a very young man who was fresh out of college.
He was smart. He was handsome. And he seemed to be a better businessman than the first two put together.
Merv was anxious, but went ahead and asked the young man the same question: "Do you notice anything different about me?"
And to his surprise, the young man answered: "Yes. You wear contact lenses."
Merv was shocked, and said, "What an incredibly observant young man. How in the world did you know that?"
The young man fell off his chair laughing hysterically and replied, "Well, it's pretty hard to wear glasses with no ears!"

그러나, 계약을 하고 난 후, 그는 그가 그런 사업의 경영에 대하여 아무것도 모른다는 걸 알았다, 그래서 재빨리 자기를 위해 일할 수 있는 사람을 고용하기로 하였다.
다음 날 그는 세 사람을 인터뷰하기로 하였다.

두 번째 인터뷰는 한 여자와 하였다, 그러고 그녀는 첫 번째 남자보다 더욱 훌륭했다.
그는 그녀에게 똑같은 질문을 하였다, "당신은 나에게 뭔가 특이한 점이 있다는 걸 느꼈나요?" 그러자 그녀가 대답하였다, "음, 당신은 귀가 없어요."
머브는 다시 화를 내고 그녀를 탈락시켰다.
세 번째인 마지막 면접은 셋 중 가장 훌륭했다. 그 면접은 막 대학을 졸업한 아주 젊은 사람과 진행되었다.
그는 똑똑했다. 그는 미남이었다. 그러고 그는 앞선 두 사람을 합친 것보다 더 나은 회사원으로 보였다.
머브는 그를 채용하고 싶었다. 하지만 계속하여 그 젊은 남자에게 같은 질문을 하였다, "당신은 나에게 무슨 특별한 점이 있다는 걸 눈치챘나요?"
놀랍게도, 그 젊은 남자가 대답하였다, "예, 당신은 콘택트렌즈를 끼고 있습니다."
