There was a man who worked all of his life and saved all of his money. He was a real miser when it came to his money.
He loved money more than just about anything, and just before he died, he said to his wife, "Now listen, when I die, I want you to take all my money and place it in the casket with me. I wanna take my money to the afterlife."
So he got his wife to promise him with all her heart that when he died, she would put all the money in the casket with him.
Well, one day he died. He was stretched out in the casket, the wife was sitting there in black next to her closest friend.
When they finished the ceremony, just before the undertakers got ready to close the casket, the wife said "Wait just a minute!"
She had a shoe box with her, she came over with the box and placed it in the casket.
Then the undertakers locked the casket down and rolled it away.
Her friend said, "I hope you weren't crazy enough to put all that money in the casket."
"Yes," the wife said, "I promised. I'm a good Christian, I can't lie. I promised him that I was going to put that money in that casket with him."
"You mean to tell me you put every cent of his money in the casket with him?"
"I sure did. I got it all together, put it into my account and I wrote him a check."
평생을 일하고 돈을 모두 저축하였던 한 남자가 있었다. 그는 돈에 관한 한 정말 인색하였다.
그는 무엇보다 돈을 더 사랑하였다, 그러고 그가 죽기 직전, 그는 자기 아내에게 말했다, "자, 잘 들어, 내가 죽으면, 당신은 내 모든 돈을 꺼내, 내 관 속에 넣어줘. 나는 내 돈을 저승으로 가져갈 거야."
그래서 그는 그가 죽었을 때, 아내는 모든 돈을 꺼내 관 속에 그와 함께 넣어 달라고 진심으로 약속하게 하였다.
그런데 어느 날 그가 죽었다. 그가 관 속에 눕혀지고, 검은 옷을 입은 아내는 자기의 가장 가까운 친구 옆에 앉아 있었다.
의식이 끝났을 때, 장의사가 관을 닫을 준비를 하기 직전에, 아내가 말했다, "잠깐만 기다려 주세요!"
그녀는 구두 상자를 갖고 있었다, 그녀가 그 상자를 갖고 와서 그걸 관 속에 넣었다.
그러고 나서 장의사는 관을 봉하고 하관하였다.
그녀의 친구가 말했다, "난 네가 그 돈을 모두 관 속에 넣는 미친 짓은 하지 않았기를 바라."
"넣었어," 하고 아내가 말했다, "난 약속했어, 난 정직한 기독교인이야, 난 거짓말을 할 수 없어. 나는 내가 그 돈을 관 속에 그와 함께 넣겠다고 그와 약속했어."
"너는 남편의 돈을 한 푼도 남기지 않고 그 관 속에 넣었다고 나에게 말하고 있는 거야?"
"틀림없이 그랬어. 나는 그 돈을 모두 찾아, 내 계좌에 넣고, 남편에게는 수표를 써주었어."
