An American, a Scot and a Canadian were in a terrible car accident. They were all brought to the same emergency room, but all three of them died before they arrived.
Just as they were about to put the toe tag on the American, he stirred and opened his eyes.
Astonished, the doctors and nurses present asked him what happened.
"Well," said the American, "I remember the crash, and then there was a beautiful light, and then the Canadian and the Scot and I were standing at the gates of heaven. St.Peter approached us and said that we were all too young to die, and said that for a donation of $50, we could return to earth. So of course I pulled out my wallet and gave him the $50, and the next thing I knew I was back here."
"That’s amazing!" said the one of the doctors, "But what happened to the other two?"
"Last I saw them," replied the American, "the Scot was haggling over the price and the Canadian was waiting for the government to pay his."
미국인 한 명, 스코틀랜드인 한 명 그리고 캐나다인 한 명이 끔찍한 자동차 사고를 당하였다. 그들은 모두 같은 응급실로 보내졌다, 그러나 세 사람 다 도착하기 전에 죽었다.
응급실에서 미국인에게 발가락 인식표를 붙이려 하는 순간 그 미국인이 움직이며 눈을 떴다.
현장에 있던 의사들과 간호사들이 놀라 그에게 무슨 일이 있었느냐고 물었다.
"음," 하고 그 미국인이 말했다, "충돌사고가 기억납니다, 그러고는 아름다운 빛이 있었고요, 그러고 나서 캐나다인과 스코틀랜드인 그리고 제가 천국의 문에 서 있었습니다. 베드로 경이 우리들에게 다가와서 우리들은 모두 죽기에는 너무 젊다고 말하였습니다. 그리고 기부금 50달러를 내면, 우리들은 지상으로 돌아갈 수 있다고 하였습니다. 그래서 당연히 저는 지갑을 꺼내어 그에게 50 달러를 주었습니다, 그다음 제가 알고 있는 건 제가 여기에 와 돌아와 있다는 것입니다."
"그 참 재미있군요!" 하고 그 의사들 중 한 명이 말했습니다, "그러나 나머지 2명에게는 무슨 일이 있었나요?"
"제가 그들을 마지막으로 보았을 때," 하고 미국인이 대답하였다, "스코틀랜드인은 값을 흥정하고 있었고 캐나다인은 정부에서 그의 돈을 지불해 주기를 기다리고 있었습니다."
