One morning, as Gary was getting ready for work, he happened to pass his daughter's room and overheared her saying her prayers.
"God bless Mommy, God bless Daddy, God bless Grandma, and goodbye Grandpa." He found it odd but thought no more of it.
Later that day when he came home from work, there was bad news.
Gary's father suffered a heart attack, but nothing could be done to save him.
A few months later, Gary once again heared his daughter as she prays: "God bless Mommy, God bless Daddy, and goodbye Grandma."
Now Gary became a little afraid, remembering what happened before with his father.
Sure enough, his mother was found to have died in her sleep that morning.
Now Gary was convinced the girl must be in touch with someone or something on the other side, so every morning he listened to her prayers.
He heared nothing out of the ordinary until again, a few months later: "God bless Mommy and goodbye Daddy."
Now Gary was frightened. At work, it's all he could focus on. He didn't leave his office for lunch, and when it's time to come home for the day, he didn't even do that. Instead he insisted on staying in the office, telling everyone he had a lot of work that must be done.
As the seconds, minutes, and hours ticked away, Gary found himself literally shaking with fear, and he had crawled underneath his death, eyes glued to his watch, tick, tick, tick...
Finally, it was past midnight and Gary was still alive. He decided maybe the "curse" on him was broken, so he left the office and drived home.
As soon as he opened the front door, his wife was there. "Where have you been?!?!" she asked.
"Honey," Gary started, "I have had one of the roughest days of my entire life and I'm just glad to be home."
"You think YOU'VE had a hard day?!?," she screamed. "Today the mailman dropped dead on our front step!!!"
어느날 아침, 개리는 출근준비를 하다가 딸의 방을 지나면서 우연히 딸의 기도소리를 들었다.
"엄마에게 축복을! 아빠에게 축복을! 할머니에게 축복을! 그리고 할아버지 굳바이!" 그는 딸의 기도가 이상했지만 더이상 생각하지 않았다.
그날 저녁 그가 퇴근하였을때 나쁜 뉴스가 기다리고 있었다.
개리의 아버지가 심장마비를 일으켰지만 살려낼 방법이 없었던 것이다.
수개월 뒤 개리는 다시 그의 딸이 기도하는 소리를 들었다, "엄마에게 축복을! 아빠에게 축복을! 그리고 할머니 굳바이!"
그러자 개리는 전에 그의 아버지에게 일어났던 일을 기억하고는 약간 두려워졌다.
틀림없었다. 그날 아침 그의 어머니는 잠자리에서 돌아가신것이 발견되었다.
이제 개리는 딸이 저승귀신에 씨웠다고 확신하게 됐다. 그래서 그는 아침마다 딸의 기도소리에 귀를 기울였다.
그는 다시는 이상한 소리를 듣지 못하다가 수개월 뒤 들리는 소리가 "엄마에게 축복을! 아빠 굳바이!"
이제 개리는 무서워졌다. 직장에서 생각나는게 그것밖에 없었다. 그는 점심 먹으러 가지도 않았고 퇴근할 시간이 되어도 자리를 뜰 수가 없었다. 그대신 다른 사람에게는 할 일이 많아 사무실에 남아있겠다고 말했다.
몇초가 지나고 몇분이 지나고 몇시간이 지나면서 그는 자기가 공포로 문자그대로 떨고 있는걸 발견했다. 그는 죽음을 두려워하며 눈은 똑딱 똑딱 시계에 고정되어 있었다.
드디어 자정이 지나갔고 개리는 아직 살아있었다. 그는 아마 자기에게 걸린 저주의 주문이 깨졌는지 모른다고 생각했다. 그래서 그는 사무실을 나가 집으로 차를 몰았다.
그가 집 현관문을 열자마자 아내가 거기 있다가 물었다. "당신 어디 갔다왔어?"
개리가 말했다, "여보, 난 오늘 내 일생에서 제일 힘든 날을 보냈어 그리고 집으로 돌아오게 되어 정말 기뻐"
그녀가 소리쳤다. "당신만 힘들었다고 생각해? 오늘 우체부가 우리집 현관계단에서 넘어져 죽었단 말이야!!!"
