A guy walks into a bar and asks for three beers.
The bartender puts them up and then watches the guy go through a peculiar ritual. "Happy Birthday, Happy Birthday, happy birthday."
Each time he says the word he drinks the beer. Then he pays and walks out.
One year later he enters the bar again and orders the same thing. The bartender watches him go through the same ritual.
Curious, he asks the bloke why.
"Well" the guy says, "I have a friend in Ireland and a friend in Australia. We have our birthdays on the same day. We can't be together so we have agreed that on this day we will each go into our local pub and have a round of drinks for each other. We have been doing this for 55 years since we were 18."
The next year the man comes in and asks the bartender for two beers.
The bartender, a bit taken aback, places two beers in front of the guy and watches him say, "happy birthday, happy birthday!"
The bartender asks, "so which one died?"
"No one."
"But you only ordered two drinks!"
"Yeah, well, I've given up drinking."
한 남자가 바 안으로 들어와 맥주 3잔을 요구하였다.
바텐더가 맥주 3잔을 올려놓았다. 그리곤 그 남자가 특이한 의식을 행하는 걸 지켜보았다. "해피 버스데이, 해피 버스데이, 해피 버스데이."
그가 그 말을 할 때마다 그 맥주를 마셨다. 그러고 나서 그는 돈을 지불하고 밖으로 나갔다.
1년 뒤, 그는 다시 그 바 안으로 들어가서 같은 걸 주문하였다. 바텐더는 그 남자가 같은 의식을 행하는 걸 지켜보았다.
호기심이 생긴 그는 그 남자에게 이유를 물었다.
"음," 하고 그 남자가 말했다, "나는 아일랜드에 한 친구가 있고 오스트레일리아에 한 친구가 있습니다. 우리들은 생일이 같은 날이었습니다.. 우리들은 함께 있을 수 없어서, 이날에는 각자가 자기 동네 술집에 가서 각자에게 술잔을 돌리기로 약속하였습니다. 우리들은 18살 때부터 시작하여 55년 동안 이걸 하고 있습니다."
그다음 해에 그 남자가 들어와서 바텐더에게 맥주 2잔을 요구하였다.
바텐더는 약간 놀라며, 맥주 두 잔을 그 남자 앞에 갖다 놓고 그 남자가 "해피 버스데이, 해피 버스데이!"라고 말하는 걸 지켜보았다.
바텐더가 물었다, "그러니까 어느 쪽이 죽었죠?"
"죽은 사람 없어요."
"하지만 당신은 두 잔만 주문하였잖아요!"
"예, 음, 내가 금주했거든요."
