Seems there was a small town where everybody contributed to the United Way. Everybody except Bradley the Lawyer that is. The local United Way director kept making phone calls and writing letters, all to no avail.
Years went by, until one happy day when he managed to get on the lawyer's calendar. Whew! Perhaps finally he could better understand the man's situation and get that 100% record he had as his goal... So their conversation:
"You know, in this small town, everybody contributes to the United Way except you. May I ask why don't you want to share the 'Help Each Other' spirit?" asked the Director.
"Well, there are certain problems in my personal life, of which you may not be aware," replied the lawyer.
"Oh, I didn't know that."
"Like my mother. Her Social Security is being cut off, and she's going to be evicted soon."
"Oh, I didn't know that," the director said sheepishly.
"And my kid sister has some nasty disease; she needs a boatload of cash for doctors and surgery."
"Oh, I didn't know that," the directory replied with a tear in his eye.
"So, if I didn't give any money to them, what makes you think I'm going to give any to you?"
한 조그마한 마을에서 모든 사람들이 유나이티드 웨이에 기부금을 낸 것 같았다. 즉 브래들리 변호사를 제외한 모두가 참여하였다. 그 지방 유나이티드 웨이 소장이 계속 전화를 걸고, 편지를 썼으나, 모든 게 헛일이었다.
몇 년이 지나갔다, 드디어 어느 운 좋은 날, 그 소장은 그 변호사의 일정에 그럭저럭 끼어들었다. 휴! 아마도 드디어 그가 그 사람의 처지를 더 잘 이해하게 되어 그의 목표인 100% 기록을 세울 수 있을 거라 생각하였다.... 그래서 그들은 아래와 같이 대화를 나누었다:
"저기 말이에요, 이 조그마한 마을에서 당신 이외의 모든 사람들이 유나이티드 웨이에 기부금을 냈습니다. 당신은 왜 '서로 돕기' 운동에 참여하지 않으시는지 그 이유를 물어봐도 될까요?" 하고 소장이 물었다.
"음, 제 개인 생활에는 당신이 알 수 없는 문제가 좀 있습니다," 하고 그 변호사가 대답하였다.
"아, 제가 그걸 몰랐군요."
"제 어머니 같은 경우에, 어머니의 사회보장연금이 끊어지고 있습니다. 그래서 어머니는 곧 퇴출당하게 되었습니다."
"아, 제가 그걸 몰랐군요," 하고 소장은 어색한 듯 말했다.
"그리고 내 누이동생은 몹쓸 병에 걸려 있습니다, 누이동생은 병원비와 수술비로 많은 돈이 필요합니다."
"아, 제가 그걸 몰랐군요," 하고 소장은 눈에 눈물을 글썽이면서 대답하였다.
"그러니, 제가 어머니와 누이동생에게 돈을 한 푼도 주지 않으면서, 당신에게는 돈을 줄 거라고 생각하는 이유가 뭡니까?"
