A forest ranger is making rounds in a remote part of the wooded reserve when he comes across an unkempt man, sitting at a makeshift campfire.
To the ranger's horror, the man is eating a fish and a bald eagle. The ranger arrests the man and puts him jail. He is brought before a judge the next morning.
The Judge asked the man, "Do you know that eating a bald eagle is a federal offense?"
"Yes I do," replied the man, "but please let me explain what happened."
"You may proceed."
"I got lost in the woods, and hadn't had anything real to eat for two weeks," the man explained. "I was so hungry, I was eating plants to stay alive." "Then one day, I arrive at a lake. I see a Bald Eagle swooping down to the water and flying away with a fish in its talons. I thought, 'if I startled the Eagle, maybe I could steal the fish.'" "Lo and behold, the eagle lighted upon a nearby tree stump to eat the fish. So, I picked up a rock and threw it. I meant to hit the stump and startle the bird. I hoped he would drop the fish and fly away." "Unfortunately, in my weakened condition, my aim was off. The rock hit the eagle squarely on his poor little head, and killed it. I agonized over what had happened, but I figured that since it was dead I might as well eat it."
The judge says he will take a recess to analyze the defendant's statement. 15 minutes pass, and the judge returns. "Due to the extreme circumstances, and because you did not intend to kill the eagle, the court will dismiss the charges."
The Judge then leans over the bench and whispers, "If you don't mind my asking, what does a bald eagle taste like?"
"Well your honor, it is hard to explain. The best way I can describe it is that its much more tender than a California Condor, but the meat is bland compared to a Spotted Owl."
삼림 경비원이 숲 보존지역에서 외진 곳을 순찰하고 있었는데 그때 그는 임시로 만든 모닥불을 피워놓고 앉아 있는 흐트러진 모습의 한 남자를 발견하였다.
놀랍게도 그 남자는 생선과 흰머리독수리를 먹고 있었다. 경비원은 그 남자를 체포하여 감옥에 넣었다. 다음 날 아침 그 남자는 판사 앞으로 끌려왔다.
판사가 그 남자에게 물었다, "피고는 흰머리독수리를 먹는 것이 연방법에 위배된다는 걸 알고 있습니까?"
"예, 알고 있습니다," 하고 그 남자가 대답하였다, "하지만 무슨 일이 있었는지 제가 설명하도록 해 주십시오."
"설명해보세요."
"저는 숲속에서 길을 잃었습니다, 그리고 2주일 동안 정말 아무것도 먹지 못하였습니다," 하고 그 남자가 설명하였다, "저는 몹시 배가 고팠습니다, 저는 살아남기 위하여 식물을 먹고 있었습니다, 그런데 어느 날, 제가 호수에 도착하였습니다. 저는 흰머리독수리 한 마리가 수면으로 급강하하더니 발톱으로 물고기 한 마리를 낚아 날아가는 걸 보았습니다. 저는 만약 제가 그 독수리를 놀라게 하면, 아마 제가 그 물고기를 훔칠 수 있으리라는 생각이 들었습니다. 놀랍게도 그 독수리는 물고기를 먹기 위하여 우연히 근처에 있는 나무 그루터기를 발견하였습니다. 그래서 저는 돌을 집어 들고 던졌습니다. 저는 그루터기를 맞춰 독수리를 놀라게 할 생각이었습니다. 불행히도, 저는 몸이 허약해진 상태라, 제 겨냥이 빗나갔습니다. 그 돌은 독수리의 불쌍한 작은 머리로 정통으로 날아가서 독수리를 죽였습니다. 저는 이런 일이 발생하여 몹시 괴로웠습니다. 그러나 저는 독수리가 죽었기 때문에 그걸 먹어도 된다고 생각하였습니다."
판사는 휴정해서 피고의 진술을 검토해 보겠다고 말하였다. 15분이 지나갔다, 그리고 판사가 되돌아왔다. "극한의 상황인 데다가 피고가 독수리를 고의로 죽인 것이 아니기 때문에 법정은 공소를 기각합니다."
그러더니 판사는 판사석 너머로 몸을 굽히고 작은 소리로 말했다, "내가 질문을 하나 하겠는데, 흰머리독수리는 어떤 맛이 나던가요?"
"예 판사님, 그건 설명하기 어렵습니다. 제가 가장 쉽게 설명해 드리자면 캘리포니아 콘도르보다는 훨씬 순한 맛이 납니다, 하지만 고기는 얼룩 올빼미에 비하면 부드럽습니다."
