Three salesmen were driving cross country when their car broke down far from civilization. After walking for some distance they came to a farmhouse.
They asked the farmer if there was a service station nearby. He replied that there was one in town but that it wouldn't be open until the next day.
He offered to let them stay at his house that night, on one condition..."Don't draw attention to my son, he's very sensitive because he was born without any ears."
After agreeing to his wishes the salesmen spent the night with the farmer.
The next morning at the breakfast table the son noticed that the salesmen were staring at him.
"What are you looking at?" he demanded.
The first salesman replied, "I was looking at your beautiful smile, it's important to take care of your teeth so you don't have to wear dentures."
The second salesman said, "I was looking at your thick curly hair, it's important to take care of your hair so you don't go bald and have to wear a wig."
The third said, "I was looking at your clear blue eyes, it's important to take care of your eyes,...Lord knows you can't wear glasses."
세 명의 외판원이 차를 타고 국토를 횡단하고 있었는데 그때 그들의 차가 문명으로부터 멀리 떨어진 오지에서 고장이 났다. 먼 길을 한참 걸은 후 그들은 한 농가에 도착하였다.
그들은 그 농부에게 가까운 곳에 차량 정비업소가 있는지 물었다. 농부는 동네에 한 곳이 있지만, 다음 날까진 문을 열지 않을 거라고 대답하였다.
그는 그들에게 자기 집에 머물 것을 제안하면서 한 가지 조건을 걸었다... "내 아들에게 관심을 보이지 마시오, 내 아들은 귀가 없이 태어나서 신경이 아주 예민합니다."
농부가 원하는 대로 하기로 하고, 그 외판원들은 그 농가에서 밤을 보내기로 하였다.
다음 날 아침 식탁에서 그 집 아들은 그 외판원들이 자기를 빤히 보고 있는 걸 알아차렸다.
"당신들은 뭘 보고 있어요?" 하고 그가 물었다.
첫 번째 외판원이 대답하였다, "나는 당신의 아름다운 미소를 보고 있었습니다, 당신은 치아를 소중히 하는 게 중요합니다, 그래야 틀니를 낄 필요가 없어집니다."
두 번째 외판원이 말했다, "나는 당신의 짙은 곱슬머리를 보고 있었습니다, 당신은 머리카락을 소중히 하는 게 중요합니다, 그래야 머리카락이 빠지지 않고 가발을 쓸 필요가 없어집니다."
세 번째 외판원이 말했다, "나는 당신의 맑고 푸른 눈을 보고 있었습니다, 당신은 눈을 소중히 하는 게 중요합니다,... 당신이 안경을 낄 수 없다는 걸 하늘은 알죠."
