"Hello?"
"Hi honey. This is Daddy. Is Mommy near the phone?"
"No Daddy. She's upstairs in the bedroom with Uncle Sam."
After a brief pause, Daddy says, "But honey, you haven’t got an Uncle Sam."
"Oh yes I do, and he's upstairs in the room with Mommy, right now."
Brief Pause. "Uh, okay then, this is what I want you to do. Put the phone down on the table, run upstairs and knock on the bedroom door and shout to Mommy that Daddy’s car just pulled into the driveway."
"Okay Daddy, just a minute."
A few minutes later the little girl comes back to the phone. "I did it Daddy."
"And what happened honey?" he asked.
"Well, Mommy got all scared, jumped out of bed with no clothes on and ran around screaming. Then she tripped over the rug, hit her head on the dresser and now she isn’t moving at all!"
"Oh my God!!! What about your Uncle Sam?"
"He jumped out of the bed with no clothes on, too. He was all scared and he jumped out of the back window and into the swimming pool. But I guess he didn’t know that you took out the water last week to clean it. He hit the bottom of the pool and I think he’s dead."
***Long Pause***
***Longer Pause***
Then Daddy says, "Swimming pool?...Is this 222-45678?"
"여보세요?"
"안녕, 하니. 나 아빠야. 엄마는 전화기 가까이 계셔?"
"아냐, 아빠. 엄마는 위층 침실에서 샘 삼촌과 같이 있어."
짧은 침묵이 흐른 후, 아빠가 말했다, "하지만 하니야, 너에겐 샘 삼촌이 없잖아."
"아냐 있어, 그리고 삼촌은 지금 바로 위층에서 엄마와 같이 있어."
짧은 침묵이 흘렀다. "어, 좋아, 그러면, 이건 내가 너에게 부탁하는 거야. 전화기를 테이블에 내려놓고, 위층으로 뛰어가서 침실 문을 노크하고 엄마에게 아빠 차가 방금 집 앞 차도에 주차하였다고 소리쳐."
"오케이 아빠, 잠깐 기다려."
잠시 후 꼬마 소녀가 전화기로 돌아왔다. "나 그렇게 했어, 아빠."
"어떻게 됐니, 하니야?" 하고 그가 물었다.
"음, 엄마가 너무 놀라서 옷도 안 입고 침대 밖으로 벌떡 일어나 소리를 지르고 뛰어다녔어. 그러더니 양탄자에 걸려 넘어져 화장대에 머리를 부딪쳤는데 이젠 전혀 움직이지를 않아!"
"아이고 맙소사! 샘 삼촌은 어째?"
"삼촌도 옷을 입지 않고 침대 밖으로 벌떡 일어났어. 삼촌도 너무 놀라서 뒤 창문 밖 수영장으로 뛰어내렸어. 하지만 삼촌은 아빠가 지난주 청소하려고 물을 뺀 걸 모르고 있었던 것 같아. 삼촌은 풀장 바닥에 부딪혀서 죽은 것 같아."
***긴 침묵이 흘렀다***

그리고 나서 아빠가 말했다, "수영장이라고?....거기가 222-45678이지?"
