Joe sought medical aid because he had bulging eyes and a persistent ringing in his ears.
A doctor looked him over and suggested removing his tonsils. The tonsillectomy resulted in no improvement, so Joe consulted a dentist who suggested that removing his teeth might eliminate the problem.
All of Joe's teeth were extracted but still his eyes bulged out and the annoying ringing in his ears continued.
A third doctor told him bluntly, "You have six months to live."
Feeling doomed and gloomy, Joe decided to treat himself right while he still had time, so he bought a flashy car, hired a chauffeur and a gardener, and got himself measured by a tailor for some new suits.
To go along with the new suits, he decided that even his shirts would be made to order.
"Okay," said the shirt maker, "let's get your measurements. Hmm, thirty-four sleeve, sixteen collar --"
"No, I wear a fifteen collar" Joe told him.
"Sixteen collar," the shirt maker repeated, measuring again.
"But I've always worn a fifteen collar," said Joe.
"Listen," said the shirt maker, "I'm telling you right now -- if you keep on wearing a tight fifteen collar, your eyes will bulge out and you'll have ringing in your ears."

의사가 그를 살펴보더니 편도선을 제거하라고 하였다. 편도선 제거 수술을 하여도 나아진 것은 없었다, 그래서 조는 치과의사와 상의하였는데 치과의사는 이를 뽑으면 그 문제가 해결될 거라고 하였다.
조는 이빨을 모두 뺐다 하지만 여전히 눈은 튀어나오고 짜증 나는 귀울림은 계속되었다.
세 번째로 찾아간 의사는 그에게 불쑥, "당신은 앞으로 살 날이 6개월밖에 남지 않았습니다."라고 말하였다.
답답하고 우울해진 그는 아직 살아있는 동안 자기 자신을 소중히 여기기로 하였다, 그래서 그는 화려한 자동차를 구입하고 운전사와 정원사를 고용하였다, 그리고 양복점에 가서 새 신사복을 맞추었다.
그는 새 신사복에 어울리도록 와이셔츠도 주문해서 맞추기로 하였다.
셔츠 재봉사가 말했다, "좋습니다, 치수를 재어 보겠습니다. 음, 소매 34, 칼라 16 --"
"아닙니다, 저는 칼라 15를 입습니다." 하고 조가 그에게 말하였다.
"칼라 16," 하고 셔츠 재봉사가 다시 재어보고 말했다.
"하지만 저는 항상 칼라 15를 입었습니다." 하고 조가 말했다.
셔츠 재봉사가 말했다, "저기요, 지금 바로 말씀드릴게요-- 만약 선생님이 계속하여 타이트하게 칼라 15를 입으시면, 선생님은 눈이 튀어나오고 귀에 이명이 생기게 됩니다."
