A hurricane blew across the Caribbean. It didn't take long for the expensive yacht to be swamped by high waves, sinking without a trace.
There were only two survivors: the boat's owner Dr. Gold and its steward Benny. Although the sea was very rough, they managed to swim to the closest island. After reaching the deserted strip of land, the steward was crying and very upset that they would never be found. The other man was quite calm, relaxing against a tree.
"Dr. Gold, Dr. Gold, how can you be so calm?" cried the distraught Benny. "We're going to die on this lonely island. No one will ever find us here."
"Sit down and listen to what I have to say, Benny," began the confident Dr. Gold. "Five years ago I gave the United Way $500,000. and another $500,000. to the United Jewish Appeal. I donated the same amounts four years ago. And, three years ago, since I did very well in the stock market, I contributed $750,000. to each. Last year business was good, so the two charities each got a million dollars."
"So what?" shouted Benny.
"Well, it's time for their annual fund drive. I KNOW they'll find me," smiled Dr. Gold.
허리케인이 카리브해를 가로질러 세차게 불었다. 얼마 지니지 않아 호화 요트가 높은 파도로 전복되어 흔적 없이 가라앉았다.
생존자는 요트 소유자 골드 박사와 요트 승무원 베니 두 사람밖에 없었다. 바다가 몹시 거칠었지만, 그들은 가장 가까운 섬으로 용케 헤엄쳐갔다. 사람이 살지 않는 황무지에 도착한 뒤, 승무원은 그들이 다시는 발견되지 못할 거라며 울부짖으며 좌절하였다. 또 한 남자는 매우 차분하게 나무에 기대어 쉬고 있었다.
"골드 박사님, 골드 박사님, 박사님은 어떻게 그렇게 차분할 수 있습니까?" 하고 마음이 산란해진 베니가 울부짖었다, "우리들은 이 외딴 섬에서 죽게 될 것입니다. 아무도 우리가 여기 있는 걸 발견하지 못할 겁니다."
"앉아서 내가 하는 말을 들어, 베니," 하고 대담한 골드 박사가 말을 시작하였다. "5년 전에 나는 유나이티드 웨이에 50만 달러를 기부하였고, 유나이티드 쥬이시 어필에도 50만 달러를 기부했어. 4년 전에도 같은 금액을 기부했고. 그리고 3년 전에는 주식이 잘 되어 각 75만 달러씩 기부했지. 작년에는 사업이 잘되어 두 자선 단체에 각 100만 달러씩을 기부했어."
"그래서 어떻게 되었나요?" 하고 베니가 소리쳤다.
"음, 매년 하는 기금 모금 운동이 벌어지고 있을 때야. 난 그들이 날 찾아낼 거로 생각해," 하고 골드 박사가 미소지었다.
