A man had fallen between the rails in a subway station. People were all crowding around trying to get him out before the train ran him over.
They were all shouting. "Give me your hand!" but the man would not reach up.
Ralph elbowed his way through the crowd and leaned over the man. "Friend," he asked, "what is your profession?"
"I am an income tax inspector," gasped the man.
"In that case," said Ralph, "take my hand!" The man immediately grasped Ralph's hand and was hauled to safety.
Ralph turned to the amazed by-standers. "Never ask a tax man to *give* you anything, you fools."
한 남자가 지하철역에서 선로 사이로 떨어졌다. 사람들이 기차가 그 남자를 치기 전에 그를 끌어내려고 모여들었다.
그들은 모두 소리치고 있었다, "당신 손을 이리 주세요!" 하지만 그 남자는 손을 뻗으려 하지 않았다.
랄프가 팔꿈치로 군중들을 밀어내고 뚫고 들어가서 그 사람 위로 몸을 굽혔다. 그가 물었다, "이봐요, 당신 직업이 뭐요?"
"저는 소득세 조사관입니다," 하고 그 남자는 숨을 헐떡거렸다.
랄프가 말했다, "그렇다면 내 손을 잡아요!" 그 남자는 즉시 랄프의 손을 잡고 안전하게 끌어올려졌다.
랄프가 놀란 구경꾼들을 돌아보고 말했다, "세무서 직원에게 절대 뭘 '달라고' 하지 마세요, 이런 바보 같은 사람들."

* 세금 조사관에게는 "Give me your hand!"처럼 "give"가 들어간 말을 하면 절대 내놓지 않으니 "give" 아닌 "take" 등 다른 말을 사용해야 내놓는다는 조크
