Pauly's family is at dinner, the 10-year-old daughter isn't eating much, and she just keeps her head down.
After a few minutes, she says, "I have something to tell you."
Everyone gets silent and they all listen.
"I am no longer the virgin I used to be." And she begins to cry.
A long silence, and Mr Pauly speaks to Mrs Pauly: "It's your fault, you know, always dressed and made up like a tramp. You think that's an example for your daughter? Always wallowing on the sofa; it's just terrible; that's why problems like this come up!"
Then Mrs Pauly lights into Mr Pauly: "And you! Do you think that you're a good example? Wasting your scrawny paycheck with your drinking buddies who even come drunk into the house -- do you think that's a good example for a little girl 10 years old?"
Then Pauly charges back in: "And her sister, that no-good, with her hairy and dope-crazed boyfriend, always with their hands all over each other and screwing in every room in the house -- you think that's a good example too?" And it goes on and on, back and forth.
Then the grandmother hugs the little girl to console her and asks, "Now, darling, how did this happen?
And the little girl answers, trying to hold back her sobbing: "Father Michael chose another girl to be the Virgin in the Christmas pageant this year."
폴리 가족이 저녁 식사를 하고 있었는데 10살짜리 딸이 별로 먹지도 않고 계속 머리를 숙이고 있었다.
잠시 후 딸이 말했다, "나 말할 게 있어."
모두가 조용히 해서 귀를 기울였다.

긴 침묵이 흘렀다, 그리고 폴리가 아내에게 말했다, "이건 당신 잘못이야, 그 왜, 항상 매춘부 같은 옷차림과 화장을 하고 다니고 있잖아. 그게 당신 딸에게 보여줄 본보기라고 생각해? 항상 소파에서 뒹굴고 있어, 아주 진저리가 나, 그러니까 그런 문제가 발생하는 거야!"
그러자 아내가 폴리를 공격했다, "그리고 당신은! 당신은 좋은 본보기를 보였다고 생각해? 당신은 술에 취해, 그 집에 드나들기까지 하는 술꾼 친구들과 함께 다니면서 쥐꼬리만한 봉급을 허비하는 거 -- 그게 당신이 10살 난 딸에게 보여줄 좋은 본보기라고 생각해?"
그러자 폴리가 다시 반박했다, "그리고 그 애 언니, 그 애도 걸러 먹었어, 털 많고 마약에 취한 보이프렌드와 어울려서 항상 서로의 몸을 아무데나 만지면서 집 이 구석 저 구석에서 섹스나 하고 -- 당신은 그것도 좋은 본보기라고 생각해?" 그러고 말다툼은 주고받으면서 계속되었다.
그때 할머니가 어린 손녀를 끌어안고 달래면서 물었다, "자, 얘야, 이런 일이 어째서 일어났니?"
그리고 손녀가 울음을 참으려고 애써가며 대답하였다, "미가엘 신부님이 금년 크리스마스 가장행렬에 다른 애를 Virgin(성모 마리아)으로 뽑았어."
