Upon interviewing for the coal mines, the foreman told Bubba he first had to take a math test. The foreman felt pretty sure Bubba would fail.
"Here's your first question," the foreman said. "Without using numbers, represent the number 9."
"Without numbers?" Bubba says. "Dat is easy," and proceeds to draw three trees.
"What's this?" the boss asks.
"Ave you got no brain? Tree and tree and tree make nine," says Bubba.
"Fair enough," says the boss. "Here is your second question. Use the same rules, but this time the number is 99."
Bubba stares into space for a while, then picks up the picture that he has just drawn and makes a smudge on each tree.
" 'Ere you go."
The boss scratches his head and says, "How on earth do you get that to represent 99?"
"Each of da trees is dirty now! So it's dirty tree, and dirty tree, and dirty tree. Dat is 99."
The boss is getting worried he's going to have to hire Bubba, so he says, "All right, last question. Same rules again, but represent the number 100."
Bubba stares into space some more, then he picks up the picture again and makes a little mark at the base of each tree, and says, " 'Ere you go. One hundred."
The boss looks at the attempt. "You must be nuts if you think that represents a hundred!"
Bubba leans forward and points to the marks at the base of each tree, and says, "A little dog come along and crap by each tree. So now you got dirty tree and a turd, dirty tree and a turd, and dirty tree and a turd, which make one hundred..... So when do I start?"
탄광에 취직하기 위한 인터뷰에서 감독이 부바에게 수학 시험을 먼저 봐야 한다고 말했다. 감독은 부바가 떨어질 게 확실하다고 느꼈다.
감독이 말했다, "자 첫 문제입니다, 숫자를 사용하지 않고 9를 나타내 보세요."
부바가 말했다, "숫자를 쓰지 않고요? 그거 쉽지요," 그리곤 세 개의 나무를 그리기 시작했다.
"이게 뭡니까?" 하고 감독이 물었다.
"머리가 비었어요? tree + tree + tree 하면 nine이 됩니다.
"좋습니다," 하고 감독이 말했다. "여기 두 번째 문제가 있습니다. 같은 방식으로 하는데, 이번에는 수가 99입니다."
부바는 한동안 허공을 응시하고 있었다, 그러더니 자기가 방금 그린 그림을 집어 들고 각 나무를 지저분하게 만들었다.
"자 여깄어요."
감독은 자기의 머리를 긁고 말했다, "저게 어떻게 99를 나타내죠?"
"각 나무가 이제는 dirty 합니다! 그러니 그건 dirty tree + dirty tree + dirty tree 가 됩니다. 그건 99죠.
감독은 부바를 고용해야 할까 걱정하였다. 그래서 그가 말했다, "좋습니다, 마지막 문제입니다, 이번에도 같은 방식으로 수 100을 나타내 보세요."
부바가 허공을 잠시 더 응시하였다, 그러더니 그는 다시 그 그림을 집어 들고 각 나무 밑동에 작은 표시를 해 두고 말했다, "자 여기 있어요, 100입니다."
감독은 그가 시도한 걸 바라보았다. "그게 100을 나타낸다고 생각하다니 당시 정신 나갔군!"
부바는 몸을 앞으로 구부리고 각 나무 밑동에 있는 표시를 가리키고 말했다, "어떤 작은 개가 와서 각 나무 옆에 똥을 눴어요. 그러니 이제는 dirty tree + turd, dirty tree + turd, dirty tree + turd, 그러면 100 이 되죠.... 그러니 난 언제부터 일을 시작하죠?"
