Farmer Jones lives with his tame bear in the remote country with only dirt access roads. His tame bear had been naughty that day so he put him in the barn and said, "You stay here until you learn how to behave yourself."
Shortly afterwards it begin to rain (a real heavy down pour). About an hour later a traveling salesman got stuck in the mud and asked the Farmer for a place to stay.
The Farmer told him he didn't have room in the house, however he could stay in the barn. He told the salesman there were no lights in the barn and his tame bear was in the barn.
The Farmer said the bear would not bother him. The salesman went to the barn.
Later another traveling salesman got stuck in the mud and the Farmer told him about the barn -- no lights and the tame bear. Salesmen left for barn.
One hour later a woman got stuck in the mud and approached the Farmer. He told her about the barn and mentioned the two traveling salesmen (he was so concerned about the salesmen he forgot to mention the bear).
The woman told the farmer that she could take care of herself and left for the barn.
Two hours later, heavy knocking at the door awakened the Farmer. When opening the door the woman was standing there with her clothes torn and rumpled.
The Farmer said, "Good heavens, what happened to you?"
The woman replied, "I give up on human nature... the first guy gave me forty dollars, the second guy gave me fifty dollars, but that cheap bastard in the fur coat never even said thanks!"

농부는 그에게 자기 집에 여유 있는 방은 없지만, 헛간에 머물 수는 있다고 말했다. 농부는 외판원에게 헛간에는 불이 없고 길들여진 곰이 그 헛간에 있다고 말하였다.
농부는 곰이 그를 괴롭히지는 않을 거라고 말했다. 외판원은 헛간으로 갔다.
그 뒤 또 한 명의 순회 외판원이 진흙에 갇혔다, 그리고 농부는 그에게 헛간에 대하여--불도 없고 길들여진 곰이 있다는 등의 말을 해 주었다. 외판원이 헛간으로 갔다.
한 시간 뒤 어떤 여자가 진흙에 갇히게 되어 농부에게 다가갔다. 농부는 그녀에게 헛간에 대해 말해 주었다, 그리고 두 사람의 순회 외판원들이 있다는 것도 말해주었다 (농부는 그 외판원들이 걱정되어 곰에 대한 이야기는 깜빡했다).
여자는 농부에게 자기 몸은 자기가 돌볼 수 있다고 말하고는 그 헛간으로 갔다.
두 시간 뒤, 시끄럽게 문을 두드리는 소리에 농부가 잠을 깼다. 문을 열자 그 여자가 거기 서 있었는데 옷이 찢어지고 구겨져 있었다.
농부가 말했다, "저런! 당신에게 무슨 일이 있었어요?"
여자가 대답하였다, "난 인간성을 포기했어요... 첫 번째 남자는 나에게 40달러를 주었고, 두 번째 남자는 나에게 50달러를 줬어요, 하지만 털 코트를 입은 저 못된 녀석은 고맙다는 말조차 없었어요!"
