A woman awakes during the night, and her husband isn`t in bed with her.
She goes downstairs to look for him.
She finds him sitting at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee in front of him. He appears to be in deep thought, just staring at the wall.
She watches as he wipes a tear from his eye and takes a sip of his coffee.
"What's the matter, dear?" she asks. "Why are you down here at this time of night?"
The husband looks up from his coffee.
"Do you remember 20 years ago when we were dating, and you were only 16?" he asks solemnly.
"Yes, I do," she replies.
"Do you remember when your father caught us in the back seat of my car making love?"
"Yes, I remember," says the wife, lowering herself into a chair beside him.
The husband continues, "Do you remember when he shoved the shotgun in my face and said, 'Either you marry my daughter, or I'll send you to jail for 20 years?'"
"I remember that, too," she replies softly.
He wipes another tear from his cheek and says, "I would have gotten out today."
어떤 여자가 밤중에 잠이 깨었는데 침대에 함께 있던 남편이 없었다.
그녀는 남편을 찾아 계단을 내려갔다.
그녀는 남편이 부엌 테이블에 앉아 커피잔을 앞에 두고 있는 걸 봤다. 그는 깊은 생각에 잠긴 듯 벽을 응시하고 있었다.
그녀는 남편이 눈물을 닦으며 커피 한 모금을 마시고 있는 걸 지켜봤다.
"여보, 무슨 일이에요?" 하고 그녀가 물었다, "왜 밤중 이 시간에 여기 내려와 있어요?"
남편이 커피에서 눈을 떼고 울려다 봤다.
"당신 20년 전 우리가 데이트 하던 날 생각나? 당신 그때 16살이었지?" 하고 그가 진지하게 물었다.
"그래요, 생각나요." 하고 그녀가 대답하였다.
"내 차의 뒷자석에서 섹스를 하고 있다가 당신 아버지에게 들킨 일이 생각나?"
"그래, 생각나요," 라고 말하며 아내는 남편 곁에 있는 의자에 앉았다.
남편은 말을 계속했다. "장인이 내 얼굴에 엽총을 들이밀고, '내 딸과 결혼하든지, 징역 가서 20년을 살든지 하라'고 말한게 기억나?"
"그것도 기억해요," 하고 그녀는 부드러운 소리로 대답하였다.
그는 다시 볼 위로 흐르는 눈물을 닦으며 말했다, "오늘 내가 출소할 텐데."

* I would have gotten out today (오늘 내가 출소할 텐데) 라고 말한 걸 보면 마지못해 결혼하였다는 뜻이다. 즉 미국에서는 16세 이하의 미성년 여자를 건드리면 중형을 받게 되어 있으므로 할 수 없이 결혼하였다는 조크
