A programmer and an engineer are sitting next to each other on a long flight from Los Angeles to New York.
The programmer leans over to the engineer and asks if he would like to play a fun game.
The engineer just wants to take a nap, so he politely declines and rolls over to the window to catch a few winks.
The programmer persists and explains that the game is real easy and is a lot of fun.
He explains, "I ask you a question, and if you don't know the answer, you pay me $5. Then you ask me a question, and if I don't know the answer, I'll pay you $5."
Again, the engineer politely declines and tries to get to sleep.
The programmer, now somewhat agitated, says, "OK, if you don't know the answer you pay me $5, and if I don't know the answer, I'll pay you $100!"
This catches the engineer's attention, and he sees no end to this torment unless he plays, so he agrees to the game.
The programmer asks the first question. "What's the distance from the earth to the moon?"
The engineer doesn't say a word, but reaches into his wallet, pulls out a five dollar bill and hands it to the programmer.
Now, it's the engineer's turn. He asks the programmer, "What goes up a hill with three legs, and comes down on four?"
The programmer looks up at him with a puzzled look.
He takes out his laptop computer and searches all of his references.
He taps into the Airphone with his modem and searches the net and the Library of Congress.
Frustrated, he sends e-mail to his co-workers--all to no avail.
After about an hour, he wakes the Engineer and hands him $100.
The engineer politely takes the $100 and turns away to try to get back to sleep.
The programmer, more than a little miffed, shakes the engineer and asks, "Well, so what's the answer?"
Without a word, the engineer reaches into his wallet, hands the programmer $5, and turns away to get back to sleep.
한 프로그래머와 한 엔지니어가 로스엔젤레스에서 뉴욕으로 향하고 있는 장거리 비행기에서 서로 바로 옆자리에 앉아있었다.
프로그래머는 엔지니어쪽으로 몸을 굽히고 재미있는 게임을 하는게 어떻겠느냐고 물었다.
엔지니어는 그냥 잠을 자고 싶었다. 그래서 그는 정중하게 거절하고는 눈을 붙이기 위해 창문쪽으로 몸을 돌렸다.
프로그래머는 그 게임이 정말 쉽고 매우 재미있다고 계속 설명했다.
그가 설명했다. "제가 선생님에게 질문을 하고 만약 선생님이 답을 하지 못하면 선생님이 제게 5달러를 주시는 겁니다. 그리고 선생님이 제게 질문을 하고 제가 답변을 못하면 제가 선생님에게 5달러를 드리는 겁니다."
다시 엔지니어는 정중히 거절하고 잠을 자려 했다.
프로그래머는 이제 다소 상기된 표정으로 말했다, "좋습니다, 만약 선생님이 답을 모르시면 선생님이 제게 5달러를 주시고, 만약 제가 답을 모르면 제가 선생님에게 100달러를 드리겠습니다."
그러자 엔지니어는 반응을 보였다. 엔지니어는 게임을 하지 않으면 계속 귀찮을 것 같았다. 그래서 게임에 동의했다.
프로그래머가 첫번째 질문을 했다. "지구와 달 사이의 거리는 얼마입니까?"
엔지니어는 한마디도 하지 않고 지갑속에서 5달러를 꺼내어 프로그래머에게 줬다.
이젠 엔지니어의 차례다. 그가 프로그래머에게 물었다. "언덕을 오를때는 세다리로 올라가고 내려올때는 네다리로 내려오는 것은 무엇입니까?"
프로그래머는 난감한 표정으로 그를 올려다보았다.
그는 랩탑 컴퓨터를 꺼내어 참고사항을 모두 찾았다.
그는 모뎀으로 무선통신망을 연결하여 인터넷과 국회 도서관을 뒤졌다.
실망한 그는 직장 동료들에게 이메일을 보냈지만 헛일이었다.
한시간뒤 그는 엔지니어를 깨우고 100달러를 건네주었다.
엔지니어는 100달러를 정중히 받고는 다시 자려고 했다.
프로그래머는 상당히 화가나서 그 엔지니어를 흔들어 깨우고 물었다, "그래, 그 답이 뭡니까?"
엔지니어는 한마디의 말도 없이 지갑을 꺼내 프로그래머에게 5달러를 건네주며 다시 자려고 돌아 앉았다.
