A big-city lawyer was representing the railroad in a lawsuit filed by an old rancher. The rancher's prize bull was missing from the section through which the railroad passed. The rancher claimed that the bull must have been hit by the train, and wanted to be paid the fair value of the bull.
The case was scheduled to be tried before the justice of the peace in the back room of the general store.
As soon as the rancher showed up, the attorney for the railroad pulled him aside and tried to get him to settle out of court. The lawyer did his best selling job, and finally the rancher agreed to take half of what he was asking.
After the rancher had signed the release and took the check, the young lawyer couldn't resist gloating a little over his success, telling the rancher, "You know, I hate to tell you this, old man, but I put one over on you in there. I couldn't have won the case. The engineer was asleep and the fireman was in the caboose when the train went through your ranch that morning. I didn't have one witness to put on the stand. I bluffed you!"
The old rancher replied, "Well, I'll tell you, young feller, I was a little worried about winning that case myself, because that darned bull came home this morning."
대도시의 어느 변호사가 한 늙은 목장주가 제소한 소송에서 철도회사를 변호하고 있었다. 목장주의 값진 황소가 철로가 통과하는 구역에서 실종되었던 것이다. 농장주는 그 황소가 열차에 치인 것이 틀림없다고 주장하고 그 황소의 적정가격을 배상하여 주기를 원했다.
그 사건은 잡화점의 밀실에서 치안 판사 앞에서 심리하기로 되어 있었다.
목장주가 나타나자마자, 철도회사 측 변호사는 그를 옆으로 데리고 가서 재판없이 협의하여 매듭지으려 하였다. 변호사는 자기 직업상의 최선을 다했다, 그리고 드디어 목장주가 요구하는 배상액의 반을 주기로 하고 합의하였다.
목장주가 양도 증서에 서명하고 수표를 가져간 후, 젊은 변호사는 자기의 성공의 기쁨에 들떠 목장주에게 말했다, "저, 이런 말 하기는 싫지만, 어르신, 제가 어르신을 속였습니다. 저는 그 사건을 이길 수가 없었습니다. 그날 아침 기차가 어르신 목장을 통과하고 있을 때 기관사는 졸고 있었고, 화부는 승무원실에 있었습니다. 저는 증언대에 세울 한 사람의 증인도 없었습니다. 제가 허세를 부려 이긴 것입니다!"
늙은 목장주가 대답했다, "음, 내가 알려드리죠, 젊은이, 난 나 자신이 그 사건에서 이긴 것이 약간 걱정스럽습니다, 왜냐하면 그놈의 황소가 오늘 아침 집으로 돌아왔거든요."
