A defending attorney was cross examining a coroner.
The attorney asked, "Before you signed the death certificate had you taken the man's pulse?"
The coroner said, "No."
The attorney then asked, "Did you listen for a heart beat?", and again the coroner said, "No."
Then the attorney asked, "Did you check for breathing?", and again the coroner said, "No."
"So when you signed the death certificate you had not taken any steps to make sure the man was dead, had you?"
The coroner, now tired of the browbeating said, "Well, let me put it this way. The man's brain was sitting in a jar on my desk, but for all I know he could be out there practicing law somewhere."
어느 피고인측 변호사가 한 검시관에게 대질 심문을 하고 있었다.
변호사가 물었다, "당신은 사망 진단서를 발행하기 전에 그 사람의 맥박을 재어 보았나요?"
검시관이 말했다, "아니오."
그러자 변호사가 물었다, "당신은 심장박동 소리를 들었나요?" 그리고 검시관은 다시 "아니오."라고 말했다.
그때 변호사가 물었다, "당신은 호흡을 체크해 보았나요?" 그리고 검시관은 다시 "아니오."라고 말했다.
"그렇다면 당신은 사망진단서를 발행하였을 때 그 사람이 사망하였다는 걸 확인하는 절차를 전혀 취하지 않았군요, 안 그런가요?"
검사관은 이제 이 협박에 지쳐서 말했다, "저, 제가 이런 식으로 설명드리죠. 그 사람의 뇌는 제 책상 위에 있는 병에 들어있습니다, 하지만 의외로 그 사람이 바깥 어딘가에서 법률 활동을 할 수 있는 모양이군요."
