The Pope is visiting town and all the residents are dressed up in their best Sunday clothes. Everyone lines up on main street hoping for a personal blessing from the Pope.
One local man has put on his best suit and he's sure the Pope will stop and talk to him. He is standing next to an exceptionally down-trodden looking bum who doesn't smell very good.
As the Pope comes walking by he leans over and says something to the bum and then walks right by the local man.
He can't believe it, then it hits him. The Pope won't talk to him, he's concerned for the unfortunate people: the poor and and feeble ones.
Thinking fast, he gives the bum $20 to trade clothes with him. He puts on the bum's clothing and runs down the street to line up for another chance for the Pope to stop and talk to him.
Sure enough, the Pope walks right up to him this time, leans over close and says, "I thought I told you to get the hell out of here!"
교황이 마을을 방문하고 있었고 모든 주민들은 가장좋은 옷들로 치장하고 나왔다. 모두가 큰 길에 줄지어 서서 교황으로부터 사적인 축복을 받기를 바랬다.
그 마을의 한 남자가 성장을 하고 나와 교황이 자기에게 말을 걸 것이라고 확신하고 있었다. 그는 유별나게 찌들어 보이는 떠돌이 남자 바로 옆에 서 있었는데 그 떠돌이는 좋지 않은 냄새를 풍기고 있었다.
교황이 옆을 지나갈때 교황은 그 떠돌이에게 몸을 기울여 뭔가를 말하더니 자기 바로 곁을 지나갔다.
그는 믿을 수가 없었다, 그때 뭔가 생각이 떠올랐다. 교황은 그와는 말하려 하지 않고 불행한 사람들 즉 불쌍하고 약한 사람들에 대하여 관심을 두고 있다고 생각했다.
재빨리 이런 생각을 하고는, 그는 그 떠돌이에게 20달러를 주고 자기 옷과 바꿨다. 그는 떠돌이의 옷을 입고 교황의 말을 듣기 위한 기회를 한번 더 잡아보기 위해 뛰어가서 줄을 섰다.
틀림없었다, 교황은 지나면서 이번에는 그에게 가까이 몸을 기울이고 말했다, "내가 당신에게 여기서 나가라고 말한 걸로 생각되는데!"
