A minister was preoccupied with thoughts of how he was going to ask the congregation to come up with more money than they were expecting for repairs to the church building.
Therefore, he talked with the organist to see what kind of inspirational music she could play after the announcement about the finances to get the congregation in a giving mood.
"Don't worry," she said. "I'll think of something."
During the service, the minister paused and said, "Brothers and Sisters, we are in great difficulty; the roof repairs cost twice as much as we expected, and we need $4,000 more. Any of you who can pledge $100 or more, please stand up."
Just at that moment, the organist started playing, "The Star Spangled Banner."
목사가 교회건물을 수리하는데 예상하였던 것보다 더 많아진 비용을 거두기 위하여 신도들에게 어떻게 말해야 할지 골몰하고 있었다.
그래서 그는 오르간 연주자에게 신도들의 헌금분위기를 조성하기 위하여 재정문제에 대한 발표가 끝난후 어떤 종류의 영감있는 음악을 연주할 수 있는지 물었다.
오르간을 연주하는 여인이 말했다, "걱정마세요, 제가 생각해 볼게요."
예배하던중 목사가 시간을 내어 말했다. "형제자매 여러분들, 우리는 큰 어려움에 직면하고 있습니다. 지붕 수리 비용이 우리가 예상하였던것보다 2배나 많이듭니다. 우린 4,000달러의 돈이 더 필요합니다. 여러분중 100달러 이상을 약속할 수 있는 사람은 제발 일어나 주세요."
바로 그때 오르간 연주자가 "더 스타 스팽글드 배너(미국 국가)"를 연주하기 시작했다.
