A wealthy lady had been traveling out of the country and was flying back home. She had a lot of luggage including a little carrier for her pet dog whom she loved very much.
When her airplane landed at the airport and her luggage was being unloaded, one of the attendants noticed that the dog inside the lady's dog carrier was dead. He went immediately and told his supervisor.
"This is just terrible!" said the supervisor. "This lady is very wealthy and could sue our company for not taking better care of her dog." He thought for a few moments and then quickly decided on a plan.
"Here," he said, giving the attendant a handful of money, "take this and go to the pet store down the road and see if you can find a dog that looks like the dead dog. Do the best you can and I'll stall the lady until you get back."
When the delay was getting to be too long, the wealthy lady complained loudly and demanded to be taken to her dog.
Luckily, the attendant had just arrived from the pet store with a live dog that he was sure not even the lady herself could tell from her own one. When he brought the carrier with the new dog inside to where the lady was, she immediately took it, opened it, then burst into tears. "This is not my dog!" she cried. "This is not my dog!"
The supervisor tried to calm her. "Yes, it is," he said. "This is your dog." The lady cried all the louder, "This is not my dog!"
Back and forth they went for several minutes. The supervisor was desperate. The dog in the carrier was identical to the woman's dead dog in every way.
He couldn't understand why she kept insisting that this was not her dog. Finally, he said, "Lady, it's obvious that this is your dog. Why do you keep saying that it's not?"
The lady, still patting her eyes with her hanky, sobbed, "Because my precious little Poopsie died while we were overseas and I was bringing her home to bury her!"
한 부유한 부인이 외국으로 여행을 갔다가 고국으로 비행기를 타고 돌아오고 있었다. 그녀는 많은 짐을 갖고 있었는데 그 짐 중에는 그녀가 무척 사랑하는 애완견 이송함이 포함되어 있었다.
그녀가 탄 비행기가 공항에 도착하여 그녀의 짐이 내려지고 있을 때, 한 승무원이 그 부인의 애완견 이송함에 있던 개가 죽어 있는 걸 발견하였다. 그는 즉시 사무장에게 가서 이를 알렸다.
사무장이 말했다, "이것 참 큰 일이군! 이 부인은 매우 부유하고 자기 개를 잘 돌보지 못하였다고 우리 회사를 고소할 수도 있어." 그는 잠시 생각해보더니 재빨리 한 가지 계획을 세웠다.
그는 그 승무원에게 한 웅큼의 돈을 주면서 말했다, "자, 이 돈을 갖고 길 아래에 있는 애완동물 가게로 가서 죽은 개와 같이 생긴 개가 있는지 찾아봐. 최선을 다 해봐 그리고 난 네가 돌아올 때 까지 이 부인을 붙들고 있을께."
너무 오래 지체되자, 그 부유한 부인은 큰 소리로 불평하면서 자기 개를 데려오라고 하였다.
다행히, 그 승무원이 막 애완동물 가게로 부터 돌아왔는데 그가 데려고 온 살아있는 개는 그 부인 조차 원래의 자기 개와 구별하기 어려울 정도였다. 승무원이 그 부인이 있는 곳으로 그 새 개가 든 이송함을 가져가자, 그녀는 즉시 그걸 받아 열었다, 그리곤 울음을 터뜨렸다. "이건 내 개가 아니야!" 하고 그녀는 소리쳤다, "이건 내 개가 아니야!"
사무장은 그녀를 진정시키려고 애썼다. "맞습니다, 맞아요," 하고 그가 말했다, "이 개는 부인의 개입니다." 그 부인은 더욱 큰 소리로 울부짖었다, "이건 내 개가 아니예요!"
입씨름이 몇 분간 계속되었다. 사무장은 필사적이었다. 이송함 속의 그 개는 모든 면에서 그 여자의 죽은 개와 똑같았다.
사무장은 그녀가 무슨 이유로 이 개가 자기 개가 아니라고 계속 우기는지 이해할 수가 없었다. 드디어 그가 말했다, "부인, 이건 틀림없는 부인의 개입니다. 왜 계속 아니라고 말씀하십니까?"
부인은 연신 손수건으로 눈을 닦으며, 흐느꼈다, "왜냐하면 내 귀여운 어린 풉시는 우리가 해외에 나가 있을 때 죽었어요, 그래서 나는 그 개를 묻어주려고 고곡으로 데려오고 있었단 말입니다!"
