A first grade teacher explains to her class that she is an American.
She asks her students to raise their hands if they were American too.
Not really knowing why but wanting to be like their teacher, their hands explode into the air like flashy fireworks.
There is, however, one exception. A girl named Kristen has not gone along with the crowd.
The teacher asks her why she has decided to be different.
"Because I am not an American."
"Then", asks the teacher, "What are you?"
"I'm a proud Canadian," boasts the little girl.
The teacher is a little perturbed now, her face slightly red. She asks Kristen why she is a Canadian.
"Well, my mom and dad are Canadians, so I'm a Canadian too."
The teacher is now angry. "That's no reason," she says loudly. "What if your mom was a moron, and your dad was a moron. What would you be then?"
A pause, and a smile. "Then," says Kristen, "I'd be an American."
1학년 선생님이 반 아이들에게 그녀는 미국인이라고 설명했다.
그녀는 학생들에게 그들도 미국인이라면 손을 들라고 했다.
이유는 잘 몰랐지만 선생님과 같이 되고 싶었기 때문에, 그들의 손은 번쩍이는 불꽃놀이처럼 공중으로 솟아올랐다.
그러나 예외가 있었다. 크리스틴이란 이름을 가진 한 소녀는 다른 아이들과 어울리지 않았다.
선생님이 그 소녀에게 너는 왜 달리하기로 하였느냐고 물었다.
"왜냐하면 저는 미국 사람이 아니거든요."
"그러면," 하고 선생님이 물었다, "너는 뭐야?"
"저는 자랑스러운 캐나다 사람입니다," 하고 어린 소녀가 자랑했다.
선생님은 이젠 약간 화가 났고, 얼굴이 약간 붉어졌다. 선생님은 크리스틴에게 왜 캐나다 사람이냐고 물었다.
"저, 제 엄마와 아빠가 캐나다 사림입니다, 그래서 저도 캐나다 사람입니다."
선생님은 이제 화가 났다. "그건 이유가 되지 못해," 하고 선생님은 큰 소리로 말했다, "만약 네 어머니가 바보였고, 네 아버지가 바보였다면 어쩔래. 그때는 네가 뭐가 되지?"
크리스틴은 멈칫하다가 웃음 짓고 말했다, "그때는 제가 미국 사람입니다."
