아메리칸 조크 - 새로 온 사서와 도서 대출 소년

The new Librarian decided that instead of checking out children's books by writing the names of borrowers on the book cards herself, she would have the youngsters sign their own names. She would then tell them they were signing a "Contract" for returning the books on time. Her first customer was a second grader, who looked surprised to see a new Librarian. He brought four books to the desk and shoved them across to the Librarian, giving her his name as he did so. The Librarian pushed the books back and told him to sign them out. The boy laboriously printed his name on each book card and then handed them to her with a look of utter disgust. Before the Librarian could even start her speech he said, scornfully, "That other Librarian we had could write." 새로 온 여사서는 도서 대출 카드에 빌려간 아이들의 이름을 자기가 쓰는 대신, 아이들에게 자기들의 이름을 직접 적도록 해야겠다고 생각하였다. 그러고 나서 그녀는 아이들에게 책을 제때 돌려주겠다는 "약정"에 서명하도록 할 생각이었다. 그녀가 처음 만난 고객은 2학년 소년이었는데, 그 소년은 새로 온 여사서를 보고 놀랐다. 그는 네 권의 책을 책상으로 가져와 책들을 사서에게 밀어주면서, 예전처럼 사서에게 자기 이름을 알려주었다. 사서는 그 책들을 도로 밀어내고 소년에게 도서 대출 카드에 사인하라고 말했다. 소년은 각 도서 대출 카드에 힘들여 자기 이름을 적어서 아주 정떨어진 표정으로 그녀에게 책들을 건네주었다. 사서가 말할 틈도 주지 않고 소년이 경멸조로 말했다, "전번에 있던 다른 사서는 글을 쓸 줄 알았어요."
