Three mothers were sitting around comparing notes on their exemplary daughters.
"There never was a daughter more devoted than my Shirley," said Mrs. Blum with a sniff. "Every summer she takes me to the Catskills for a week, and every winter we spend a week at Delray Beach."
"That's nothing compared to what my Marilyn does for me," declared Mrs. Pollack proudly. "Every winter she treats me to two weeks in Miami, and in the summer two weeks in the Hamptons, in my own private guest house."
Mrs. Siegel sat back with a proud smile. "Nobody loves her mother like my Sherry does.....Nobody."
"So what does she do?" asked the two women, turning to her.
"Three times a week she gets into a cab, rain or shine, goes to the best psychiatrist in the city, and pays him a hundred and fifty dollars an hour... ...just to talk about me!"
세 명의 어머니들이 모여 앉아서 그들의 모범적인 딸들에 대하여 이야기를 나누고 있었다.
"내 딸 셜리 보다 더 헌신적인 딸은 없을 거야," 하고 블름 부인이 코를 벌름거리며 말했다. 그 애는 매년 여름이면 날 일주일간 캐츠킬로 데려가고, 매년 겨울이면 우리는 델레이비치에서 일주일을 보내."
"내 딸 마릴린이 나에게 해주는 것에 비하면 그건 아무것도 아니야," 하고 폴락 부인이 자랑스럽게 소리쳤다. "매년 겨울이면 그 애는 2주간 날 마이애미에 데려가고, 매년 여름 2주간은 내 개인 게스트하우스가 있는 햄프턴에 데려가거든."
시겔 부인은 몸을 뒤로 젖히고 자랑스러운 미소를 짓고 있었다. "내 딸 셰리만큼 자기 엄마를 사랑하는 사람은 없을 거야.... 아무도 없지."
"그럼 그 애는 어떻게 하는데?" 하고 두 여자가 그녀를 돌아보고 물었다.
"1주일에 세 번 그 애는 비가 오나 날이 맑으나 택시를 타고 시내에서 제일 좋은 정신과 의사에게 가서, 시간당 150달러를 내는데.... 그냥 나에게 관한 말만 해!"
