The two ladies were sitting in the living room, waiting for their hostess, who was slightly delayed.
The daughter of the family was with them, on the theory that she would keep the visitors occupied during the wait.
The child was about six years old, snub nosed, freckled, buck toothed and bespectacled.
She maintained a deep silence and the two ladies peered doubtfully at her.
Finally, one of them muttered to the other, "Not very p-r-e-t-t-y, I fear," carefully spelling the key word.
Whereupon the child piped up, "But awful s-m-a-r-t!"
두 여자가 여주인을 기다리면서 거실에 앉아있었는데, 여주인이 조금 지체되었다.
방문객이 기다리는 동안 그들을 지루하지 않게 해주려는 생각에서, 그 집 딸이 그들과 함께 있었다.
그 아이는 6살쯤 되어 보였는데, 들창코에, 주근깨가 나고, 뻐드렁니에 안경을 끼고 있었다.
그 아이는 계속 아무 말이 없었고, 두 여자는 그 아이를 이상한 듯 응시하고 있었다.
드디어, 그들 중 한 여자가 다른 여자에게, "별로 피-알-이-티-티-와이 하군, (별로 이쁘지는 않군,)"하고 조심스럽게 키워드를 스펠링 하였다.
그러자 그 아이가 소리쳤다, "하지만 아주 에스-엠-에이-알-티 하답니다! (하지만 아주 똑똑하답니다!)"
