It seems that there were twin brothers by the name of Jones, John and Joe. John was married and Joe was single.
Joe was the proud owner of a dilapidated boat.
It so happened that Joe's boat sank on the same day that John's wife died.
A few days later a kindly old lady met Joe on the street, and mistaking him for John said: "I was sorry to hear of your great loss, and you must feel terrible."
Joe replied; "Well, I am not a bit sorry. She was a rotten old thing from the start. Her bottom was all chewed up, and she smelled of old fish. The first time I got into her she made water faster than anything I ever saw. She had a crack and a pretty big hole in front that kept getting bigger and bigger every time that I used her. It got so I could handle her all right, but when someone else was using her she leaked like anything. This is what finished her off: Four guys from the other side of town came down looking for a good time. They asked if I could rent her to them. I warned them that she wasn't so hot, but the crazy fools all tried to get into her at the same time. It was too much for her and she cracked right up the middle!"
THE OLD LADY FAINTED.
이름이 '존'과 '조'라 불리는 쌍둥이가 있었던 것 같다. 존은 결혼을 하였고, 조는 싱글이었다.
조는 낡아빠진 보트 한 척을 가지고 있는 게 자랑스러웠다.
참으로 우연히도 존의 아내가 죽는 날에 조의 보트가 가라앉았다.
며칠 후 인정 많은 할머니 한 분이 거리에서 조를 만났는데 할머니는 그를 존으로 착각하고 말했다: "아주 큰 손실을 당했다는 소식을 듣고 유감스러웠습니다. 상심이 매우 크겠습니다."
조가 대답했다: "아뇨, 조금도 상심이 되지 않습니다. 그녀(보트를 가리킴)는 처음부터 낡아빠진 것이었습니다. 그녀의 하체는 너덜너덜하고 썩은 생선냄새가 났어요. 제가 처음으로 거기에 올라탔을 때 그렇게 빨리 물이 고이는 걸 본 적이 없습니다. 그녀는 틈이 벌어졌고 앞쪽에 꽤 큰 구멍이 있었는데 제가 사용할 때마다 그 구멍이 점점 커졌어요. 전 그녀를 잘 다루어 왔습니다만 다른 사람이 그녀를 사용할 때는 물이 많이 새었습니다. 그녀가 수명을 다하게 된 것은 이렇습니다: 동네 저쪽에 사는 청년 넷이 놀러 왔더라고요. 그들은 저에게 그녀를 빌릴 수 있느냐고 묻더라고요. 저는 그들에게 그녀는 그렇게 좋은 건 아니라고 경고했죠, 그러나 그 바보 같은 놈들이 한꺼번에 올라타려고 했죠. 네 명은 그녀에게는 너무 많은 것이거든요. 그녀는 한가운데가 갈라져버렸습니다!"
그 할머니는 실신해버렸다.
