A very intelligent boy was fortunate enough to be receiving a far better education than his parents had enjoyed, and his vocabulary far outstripped theirs.
One day he came home from school and said, “Mommy, may I relate to you a narrative?”
“What’s a narrative, Gerald?” she asked.
“A narrative, Mommy, is a tale.”
“Oh, I see,” said his mother nodding, and Gerald told her his story.
At bedtime as he was about to go upstairs he said, “Shall I extinguish the light Mommy?”
“What’s extinguish?” she asked.
“Extinguish means to put out, Mommy,” said brainy Gerald.
“Oh, I see. Yes, certainly.”
The next day the clergyman came to tea and the family dog began to make a nuisance of himself, as a dog will, by begging for goodies from the table.
“Gerald,” said his mother, trying to impress, “Take that dog by the narrative and extinguish him!”
아주 총명한 어떤 소년이 요행히도 그의 부모들이 누렸던 교육보다 훨씬 좋은 교육을 받아 그가 사용하는 언어 수준이 부모들을 능가하였다.
어느 날 그는 학교에서 집으로 돌아와서 말했다, "엄마, 나 엄마에게 담화 하나 해도 돼?"
"담화가 뭐야, 제럴드?" 하고 엄마가 물었다.
"담화는 이야기야, 엄마."
"아, 알겠어," 하고 그의 어머니는 머리를 끄덕였다, 그러고 제럴드는 어머니에게 이야기했다.
취침 시간에 그는 위층으로 올라가려다가 말했다, "내가 불을 소멸(소등)시킬까, 엄마?"
"소멸이 뭐야?" 하고 엄마가 물었다.
"소멸은 사라지게 한다는 뜻이야, 엄마," 하고 똑똑한 제럴드가 말했다.
"아, 알겠어. 그래, 그렇고 말고."
다음날 목사가 차를 마시러 왔는데 집 안에 있던 개가, 다른 개들처럼, 테이블 위에 있는 맛있는 걸 달라고, 성기시게 굴기 시작하였다.
"제럴드," 하고 그의 어머니가 감명을 주려고 말했다, "저 개를 담화해서 데려가 소멸시켜라!"
