Ed and Ted went to the fair. They came across a small crowd gathered around a stall and went over to take a look.
"What's going on?" Ed asked one of the crowd.
"We're watching to see if some idiot can ride that bronco machine," he said nodding towards a fearsome looking machine. "Nobody has managed to stay on for the full three minutes yet. And there's a prize of $1000 for anybody who can."
"I can do that!" Ed said confidently.
"No you can't," said Ted.
"I sure as hell can!" said Ed.
"You'll get yourself killed if you try and ride that monster," said Ted.
"Watch this," said Ed and climbed aboard the bronco machine.
The machine thrashed wildly, up and down, around in circles but still a grim-faced Ed clung to its back.
After two minutes the machine was bucking almost vertically and spinning until Ed was a blur. But when the three minutes were up Ed was still on the machine's back acknowledging the cheers and cries from the small crowd.
He dismounted, collected his winnings and rejoined Ted.
"Where in hell did you learn to ride a bucking bronco like that!?" Ted asked.
"Remember three months ago," Ed said... "When my wife had whooping cough.....?"
에드와 테드가 박람회에 갔다. 그들은 한 칸막이 둘레에 약간의 구경꾼들이 모여있는 걸 보고 무슨 일인가 보러 갔다.
"뭘하고 있나요?"하고 에드가 구경꾼 중 한 사람에게 물었다.
"우린 어떤 사람이 저 야생마 기계를 탈 수 있는지 보려고 지키고 있습니다," 하고 그 사람은 무시무시해 보이는 기계를 바라보며 고개를 끄덕이고 말했다. "아직 아무도 3분을 채워 저 기계 위에 머물러 있는 사람이 없었습니다. 그렇게 할 수 있는 사람에겐 누구에게나 1,000 달러의 상금을 줍니다."
"난 그렇게 할 수 있어!" 하고 에드가 자신 있게 말했다.
"안돼, 넌 할 수 없어," 하고 테드가 말했다.
"난 틀림없이 할 수 있어!" 하고 에드가 말했다.
"만약 네가 저 괴물을 시험해보려고 올라탄다면 넌 죽고 말 거야," 하고 테드가 말했다.
"이걸 지켜봐," 하고 에드가 말하면서 야생마 기계 위에 올라탔다.
기계는 위아래로, 좌우로, 빙빙 돌며 거칠게 요동쳤다, 하지만 험악한 얼굴이 된 에드는 여전히 기계의 등에 착 붙어있었다.
2분 뒤에는 그 기계가 거의 수직으로 뛰어오르며 회전했다, 드디어 그는 녹초가 되었다. 그러나 3분이 되었을 때, 에드는 구경꾼들의 환호와 고함소리를 의식하면서 여전히 기계의 등에 붙어 있었다.
그는 내려와서 상금을 받고는 테드와 합류하였다.
"도대체 너 어디서 저런 야생마 타는 법을 배웠어?" 하고 테드가 물었다.
에드가 말했다, "3개월 전 내 마누라가 백일해를 앓고 있을 때가 기억나....?"
