It was many years ago since the embarrassing day when a young woman, with a baby in her arms, entered his butcher shop and confronted him with the news that the baby was his and asked what was he going to do about it.
Finally he offered to provide her with free meat until the boy was 16. She agreed.
He had been counting the years off on his calendar, and one day the teenager, who had been collecting the meat each week, came into the shop and said, "I'll be 16 tomorrow."
"I know," said the butcher with a smile, "I've been counting too, tell your mother, when you take this parcel of meat home, that it is the last free meat she'll get, and watch the expression on her face."
When the boy arrived home he told his mother.
The woman nodded and said, "Son, go back to the butcher and tell him I have also had free bread, free milk, and free groceries for the last 16 years and watch the expression on his face!"
오래전에 이런 부끄러운 일이 있었다. 그때 한 여자가 아기를 팔에 안고 그의 정육점으로 들어왔다. 그리곤 그에게 그 아기가 그의 자식이라면서 어떻게 할 건지 따졌다.
드디어 그는 그 아기가 16세가 될때까지 공짜로 고기를 제공하겠다고 제의했다. 여자는 동의했다.
그는 달력을 체크하며 세월이 지나가길 기다렸다. 그리고 매주 고기를 받으러 상점에 들리던 소년이 어느날 "내일이면 16세가 됩니다."라고 말했다.
그가 미소짓고 말했다. "알고 있어, 나도 날짜를 계산하고 있었으니까. 이 고기를 집으로 가져가거든 어머니에게 이게 마지막으로 주는 공짜 고기라고 말씀드리고, 어머니 얼굴 표정을 살펴보거라."
소년이 집으로 돌아왔을때 어머니에게 그의 말을 전했다.
그녀가 고개를 끄덕이고 말했다, "아들아, 그 정육점으로 가서 말하거라, 지난 16년 동안 빵도 공짜로 먹었고, 우유도 공짜로 먹었고, 물품도 공짜로 얻었다고 말이야, 그리고 그 사람의 얼굴 표정이 어떤지 살펴봐라!"
