In the 16th and 17th centuries, everything had to be transported by ship and it was also before the invention of commercial fertilizers,
so large shipments of manure were quite common.
It was shipped dry, because in dry form it weighed a lot less than when wet, but once water (at sea) hit it, not only did it become heavier, but
the process of fermentation began again, of which a by product is methane gas of course.
As the stuff was stored below decks in bundles you can see what could (and did) happen.
Methane began to build up below decks and the first time someone came below at night with a lantern, BOOM!
Several ships were destroyed in this manner before it was determined just what was happening
After that, the bundles of manure were always stamped with the instruction 'Stow high in transit ' on them, which meant for the sailors
to stow it high enough off the lowerdecks so that any water that came into the hold would not touch this volatile cargo and start the
production of methane.
Thus evolved the term ' S.H.I.T ', (Stow High In Transit) which has come down through the centuries and is in use to this very day.
You probably did not know the true history of this word.
Neither did I. I had always thought it was a golf term.

단지 무슨 일이 일어났는지 확인되기 전에는 여러 선박이 이런 방식으로 파괴되었다.
그 후, 비료 묶음에는 항상 그 위에 'Stow high in transit(수송 중 높은 곳에 보관하세요)'라는 지시 문구가 적힌 스탬프를 찍어 두었다.
그건 선원들이 하갑판에서 충분히 떨어진 곳에 그걸 저장해서 짐칸에 물이 들어오더라도 물이 이 휘발성 적하물에 닿아 메탄가스가 생성되지 않도록 해야 한다는 의미였다.
그래서 'S.H.I.T (Stow High in Transit)'라는 용어가 만들어졌고, 이 용어는 수 세기를 내려와 바로 오늘까지 사용되고 있다.
아마 여러분은 이 단어의 진짜 역사를 몰랐을 것이다.
나도 몰랐다. 나는 항상 그게 골프 용어라고 생각하고 있었다.
