A three-year-old had been told several times to get ready for bed.
The last time his mom told him, she was very insistent.
His response was, "Yes, sir!"
Correcting him, she said, "You would say, 'yes, sir,' to a man. I am a lady, and you would say 'yes, ma'am,' to a lady."
To quiz him on this lesson, she then asked him, "What would you to Daddy?"
"Yes, sir!" came the reply.
"Then what would you say to Mama?"
"Yes, ma'am!" he proudly answered.
"Good job! Now, what would you say to Grandma?"
He lit up and said, "Can I have a cookie?"
세 살짜리 아이가 잠잘 준비를 하라는 말을 여러 번 들었다.
마지막으로 그의 엄마가 말했다, 엄마는 아주 엄하게 타일렀다.
그의 대답은, "Yes, sir!"였다.
아이의 말을 바로잡아 주기 위하여 그녀가 말했다, "넌 남자에게는 'yes, sir,'라고 말해야 하고, 여자에게는 'yes, ma'am'이라고 말해야 해."
이 가르침을 시험해보려고, 엄마가 그에게 물었다, "아빠에게는 뭐라고 할 거야?"
"Yes, sir!"라는 대답이 돌아왔다.
"그러면 엄마에게는 뭐라고 말할 거야?"
"Yes, ma'am!" 하고 아이가 자랑스럽게 대답하였다.
"잘했어! 자, 할머니에게는 뭐라고 말할 거야?"
아이가 불을 켜고 말했다, "나 과자 하나 먹어도 돼?"
