One morning, as Sarah is leaving Starbucks with her usual take-away coffee, she notices an unusual funeral procession coming along the road towards her.
At the front is a large black hearse and 20 yards behind this is a second black hearse. A solitary woman is walking behind the second hearse with an Alsatian on a lead. Behind the woman are 50 other women walking single file.
Sarah is very curious and goes over to the woman with the dog and says, "I’m sorry about your loss."
"Thank you," says the woman, "you’re very kind."
"I know it’s a bad time to ask," says Sarah, "but whose funeral is this?"
"It’s my husband's funeral," replies the woman.
"So what happened to him?" asks Sarah.
The woman replies, "My dog attacked and killed him."
"And who is in the second hearse?" asks Sarah.
The woman answers, "My mother-in-law. She was trying to help my husband when the dog turned on her."
A poignant and thoughtful moment of silence passes between the two women.
"Can I borrow the dog?" asks Sarah.
"Go to the back of the line," replies the woman.
어느 날 아침 사라가 스타벅스에서 일상 하던 대로 가져갈 커피를 들고 나오면서 특이한 장의행렬이 길을 따라 그녀가 있는 쪽으로 오고 있는 걸 보았다.
앞에는 커다란 검은 영구차가 있었고 그 뒤로 20 야드 떨어진 곳에 두 번째 검은 영구차가 있었다. 한 여인이 홀로 두 번째 영구차 뒤에서 줄에 매인 알세이션 개를 끌고 있었다. 그 여인의 뒤로는 50명의 다른 여인들이 한 줄로 서서 걷고 있었다.
사라는 몹시 궁금하여 개를 끌고 있는 그 여자에게 가서 말했다, "상사에 위로의 말씀을 드립니다."
그 여자가 말했다, "감사합니다, 아주 친절하시군요."
사라가 말했다, "질문드릴 때가 아니라는 걸 알고 있습니다만 이건 누구의 장례입니까?"
"제 남편의 장례입니다," 하고 그 여자가 대답하였다.
"그럼 남편에게 무슨 일이 있었나요?"하고 사라가 물었다.
그 여자가 대답하였다, "제 개가 남편을 공격하여 죽였습니다."
"그리고 두 번째 영구차에는 누가 있습니까?"하고 사라가 물었다.
그 여자가 대답하였다, "제 시어머니입니다. 시어머니가 남편을 구하려고 애를 쓰실 때 개가 시어머니에게 달려들었습니다."
슬픔과 사색에 잠긴 침묵의 순간이 두 여인 사이를 지나갔다.
"제가 그 개를 빌릴 수 있습니까?" 하고 사라가 물었다.
"줄 뒤에 가서 서세요,"라고 그 여인이 대답하였다.
