Bill Clinton is visiting a school. In one class, he asks the students if anyone can give him an example of a "tragedy."
One little boy stands up and offers that, "If my best friend who lives next door is playing in the street when a car came by and killed him, that would be a tragedy."
"No," Clinton says, "That would be an ACCIDENT."
A girl raises her hand. "If a school bus carrying fifty children drove off a cliff, killing everyone inside...that would be a tragedy."
"I'm afraid not," explains Clinton. "That is what we would call a GREAT LOSS."
The room is silent; none of the other children dare volunteer.
"What?" asks Clinton, "Isn't there anyone here who can give me an example of a tragedy?"
Finally a boy in the back raises his hand. In a timid voice, he says: "If an airplane carrying Bill and Hillary Clinton was blown up by a bomb, *that* would be a tragedy."
"Wonderful!" Clinton beams. "Marvelous! And can you tell me WHY that would be a tragedy?"
"Well," says the boy, "because it wouldn't be an accident, and it certainly would be no great loss!"
빌 클린턴이 어느 학교를 방문하고 있었다. 한 교실에서, 그는 학생들에게 '비극'이란 무엇인지 사례를 들어 말해 줄 수 있는 사람이 있느냐고 물었다.
한 꼬마 소년이 일어서서 말했다, "만약 내 옆집에 살고 있는 가장 친한 친구가 길에서 놀고 있었는데 그때 자동차가 지나가다가 그를 치어 죽였다면, 그게 '비극'일 것입니다."
클린턴이 말했다, "아냐, 그건 사고야."
한 소녀가 손을 들었다. "만약 아이들 50명이 타고 있는 스쿨버스가 낭떠러지에서 굴러떨어져 타고 있던 아이들이 다 죽었다면... 그게 비극입니다."
"그건 아닌 것 같구나," 하고 클린턴이 설명하였다, "그건 큰 손실이라고 불러야 해."
교실은 조용하였다, 다른 아이들은 아무도 감히 나서려 하지 않았다.
클린턴이 물었다, "뭐지? 비극의 사례를 들어 설명할 사람이 여기엔 아무도 없나?"
드디어 뒤에 있던 한 소년이 손을 들었다. 자신감 없는 목소리로 소년이 말했다, 만약 빌과 힐러리 클린턴이 타고 있던 비행기가 폭파되었다면, 그건 비극이 될 것입니다."
"아주 잘했어!" 하고 클린턴이 웃었다. "멋진 말이야! 그리고 그게 왜 비극인지 나에게 말할 수 있니?"
소년이 말했다, "음, 그게 사고도 아닐 것이고, 분명 큰 손실도 아닐 것이기 때문입니다!"
