Walking through Chinatown, a tourist is fascinated with all the Chinese restaurants, shops, signs and banners. He turns a corner and sees a building with the sign, "Hans Olaffsen's Laundry."
"Hans Olaffsen?", he muses. "How the heck does that fit in here?"
So he walks into the shop and sees an old Chinese gentleman behind the counter.
The tourist asks, "How did this place get a name like 'Hans Olaffsen's Laundry?'"
The old man answers, "Is name of owner."
The tourist asks, "Well, who and where is the owner?"
"Me, is right here," replies the old man.
"You? How did you ever get a name like Hans Olaffsen?"
"Is simple," says the old man. "Many, many year ago when come to this country, was stand in line at Documentation Center. Man in front was big blonde Swede. Lady look at him and go, 'What your name?' He say, "Hans Olaffsen." then she look at me and go, 'What your name?'"
"I say, Sem Ting."
한 여행객이 차이나타운을 지나가다가 중국인 식당, 상점, 간판, 깃발 등 모든 것에 매료되었다. 그는 모퉁이를 돌다가 "한스 올라프센 세탁소"라는 간판이 걸린 건물을 보았다.
"한스 올라프센 이라고?" 그는 생각하였다, "그게 어떻게 여기에 어울리나?"
그래서 그는 상점 안으로 들어가서 카운터 뒤의 중국인 노신사를 만났다.
여행객이 물었다, "이곳에 어떻게 한스 올라프센 세탁소란 이름이 붙었습니까?"
노인이 대답했다, "주인의 이름입니다."
여행객이 물었다, "음, 주인은 누구시고 어디 계십니까?"
"바로 여기 있는 저입니다," 하고 노인이 대답하였다.
"당신이라고요? 어떻게 한스 올라프센과 같은 이름을 얻게 되었습니까?"
"간단하죠," 하고 노인이 말했다, "아주 오래전 제가 이 나라에 왔을 때 문서 관리실에서 줄을 서 있었습니다. 내 앞에 커다란 금발의 스웨덴인이 있었습니다. 여직원이 그 사람을 쳐다보고 말했습니다, '당신 이름이 뭡니까?' 그 사람이 말했습니다, '한스 올라프센입니다.' 그러고 나서 그 여직원이 저를 쳐다보고 말했습니다, '당신 이름은 뭡니까?'"
"제가 셈팅이라고 말했죠."
