About a century or two ago, the Pope decided that all the Jews had to leave Rome. Naturally there was a big uproar from the Jewish community.
So the Pope made a deal. He would have a religious debate with a member of the Jewish community. If the Jew won, the Jews could stay. If the Pope won, the Jews would leave.
The Jews realized that they had no choice. So they picked a middle aged man named Moishe to represent them. Moishe asked for one addition to the debate. To make it more interesting, neither side would be allowed to talk. The Pope agreed.
The day of the great debate came. Moishe and the Pope sat opposite each other for a full minute before the Pope raised his hand and showed three fingers. Moishe looked back at him and raised one finger.
The Pope waved his fingers in a circle around his head. Moishe pointed to the ground where he sat. The Pope pulled out a wafer and a glass of wine. Moishe pulled out an apple. The Pope stood up and said, "I give up. This man is too good. The Jews can stay."
An hour later, the cardinals were all around the Pope asking him what had happened.
The Pope said, "First I held up three fingers to represent the Trinity. He responded by holding up one finger to remind me that there was still one God common to both our religions. Then I waved my finger around me to show him that God was all around us. He responded by pointing to the ground and showing that God was also right here with us. pulled out the wine and wafer to show that God absolves us from our sins. He pulled out an apple to remind me of the original sin. He had an answer for everything. What could I do?"
Meanwhile, the Jewish community had crowded around Moishe. "What happened?" they asked.
"Well," said Moishe, "First he said to me that the Jews had three days to get out of here. I told him that not one of us was leaving. Then he told me that this whole city would be cleared of Jews. I let him know that we were staying right here."
"Yes, yes,.. and then???" asked the crowd.
"I don't know," said Moishe, "He took out his lunch, and I took out mine."
한두 세기 전, 로마 교황은 로마에 있는 모든 유대인을 로마에서 축출하기로 하였다. 당연히 유대인 사회에서는 큰 소동이 일어났다.
그래서 교황은 타협하기로 하였다. 그는 유대인 사회의 한 대표와 종교에 관한 토론을 하기로 하였다. 만약 그 유대인이 이기면 유대인들은 머물 수가 있고, 만약 교황이 이기면 유대인들은 떠나야 하는 것이었다.
유대인들은 그들에게는 선택의 여지가 없다는 걸 알았다. 그래서 그들은 모이세라는 중년의 남자를 그들의 대표로 뽑았다. 모이세는 그 토론에 한 가지 조건을 달자고 요구하였다. 좀 더 흥미 있게 하기 위하여, 양쪽 모두 말을 해서는 안 된다는 것이었다. 교황은 동의하였다.
대토론의 날이 왔다. 모이세와 교황은 꼬박 1분 동안 서로 마주 앉았는데 교황이 손을 들어 손가락 세 개를 보여주었다. 모이세는 교황을 바라보고 손가락 하나를 들었다.
교황은 손가락을 자기 머리 주위로 둥그렇게 흔들었다. 모이세는 자기가 앉아있는 땅을 가리켰다. 교황이 면병과 한 잔의 포도주를 꺼냈다. 모이세는 사과를 꺼냈다. 교황이 일어서서 말했다, "내가 양보했소. 이 사람은 아주 훌륭한 사람이군요. 유대인들은 머물러도 좋습니다."
한 시간 뒤, 추기경들이 교황 주위로 모여들어 교황에게 어떻게 되었느냐고 물었다.
교황이 말했다, "첫 번째로 나는 삼위일체를 나타내기 위하여 손가락 세 개를 들었습니다. 그 사람은 우리 양쪽 종교가 한 하느님을 공통으로 섬기고 있다는 것을 나에게 상기시키기 위하여 손가락 하나를 들었습니다. 그리고 내가 하느님은 우리 주위 어디에도 계신다는 것을 그에게 보여주기 위하여 한 손가락으로 내 주위를 흔들었습니다. 그는 땅을 가리켜 답하면서 하느님은 우리 주위 바로 여기에 있다는 걸 보여주었습니다. 나는 하느님은 우리들의 죄를 사하여 주신다는 걸 보여주기 위하여 포도주와 면병(wafer)을 꺼냈습니다. 그는 나에게 원죄를 상기시키기 위하여 사과 하나를 꺼냈습니다. 그 사람은 무슨 문제이든 답을 가지고 있었습니다. 내가 무엇을 하겠습니까"
한편, 유대인 사회의 유대인들은 모이세 주위로 모여들었다. "어떻게 되었습니까?"하고 그들이 물었다.
모이세가 말했다, "음, 첫 번째로 교황이 나에게 유대인들은 사흘 안에 여기서 나가라고 하였습니다. 내가 교황에게 우린 한 사람도 떠나지 않는다고 말했습니다. 그런 다음 교황은 나에게 이 도시 전체에서 유대인들은 추방될 것이라고 말했습니다. 나는 교황에게 우리들은 바로 여기에 머물 것이라고 말했습니다."
"그래요, 그래요... 그리고는 어쨌어요?" 하고 군중들이 물었다.
모이세가 말했다, "모르겠어요, 교황이 점심을 꺼냈고, 나는 내 점심을 꺼냈습니다."
