A family had twin boys whose only resemblance to each other was their looks. If one felt it was too hot, the other thought it was too cold. If one said the TV was too loud, the other claimed the volume needed to be turned up.
Opposite in every way, one was an eternal optimist, the other a doom & gloom pessimist.
Just to see what would happen, on the twins' birthday their father loaded the pessimist's room with every imaginable toy and game.
The optimist's room he loaded with horse manure.
That night the father passed by the pessimist's room and found him sitting amid his new gifts crying bitterly.
"Why are you crying?" the father asked.
"Because my friends will be jealous, and I'll have to read all these instructions before I can do anything with this stuff. I'll constantly need batteries, and my toys will eventually get broken," answered the pessimistic twin.
Passing the optimist twin's room, the father found him dancing for joy in the pile of manure.
"What are you so happy about?" he asked.
To which his optimist twin replied, "There's got to be a pony in here somewhere!"
한 가족에 쌍둥이 소년이 있었는데 서로 닮은 점이라고는 그들의 모습뿐이었다. 만약 한 아이가 너무 덥다고 느끼면, 다른 아이는 너무 춥다고 생각하였다. 만약 한 아이가 TV 소리가 너무 크다고 말하면, 다른 아이는 볼륨을 더 높여야 했다.
모든 면에서 반대였다, 한 아이는 영원한 낙천주의자였고, 다른 아이는 절망적 비관주의자였다.
무슨 일이 일어나나 보기 위하여, 쌍둥이 생일에 그들의 아버지는 비관주의자의 방에는 온갖 종류의 장난감과 게임기를 들여다 놓았다.
낙천주의자의 방에는 말똥을 듬뿍 들여다 놓았다.
그날 밤 아버지가 비관주의자 방을 지나가다가 아이가 새로운 선물들 속에 앉아서 몹시 울고 있는 걸 보았다.
"너 왜 울고 있니?"하고 아버지가 물었다.
"왜냐하면 친구들이 질투할 것이고, 내가 이 물건들을 조작할 수 있게 되기 전에 이 모든 지시사항을 다 읽어야 하기 때문이야. 그리고 배터리가 계속 필요하고, 결국은 내 장난감들이 고장 날 것이야," 하고 비관주의 쌍둥이가 대답하였다.
낙천주의 쌍둥이 방을 지나다가, 아버지는 아이가 말똥 더미 속에서 기뻐서 춤을 추고 있었다.
"너는 뭣 때문에 그렇게 좋으냐?" 하고 아버지가 물었다.
그 말에 낙천주의 쌍둥이가 대답하였다, "여기 어딘가에 조랑말이 있는 게 틀림없거든!"
