An old salt was telling his endless tale of sea adventures. This time about a friend of his.
"That friend was the cook of a wind jammer. Once he got into a terrible shipwreck and found himself on an island in the hands of a band of savage cannibals. When the cannibals were preparing for a feast he said to the cannibal's chief: 'Going to eat me, I take? But you wouldn't like me,' he declared solemnly. He took out his pocket knife, sliced a piece from the calf of his leg, and handed to the chief. 'Try it, and see for yourself,' he urged. The chief took one bite, grunted, and spat. 'The dinner is off!' he ordered."
"My friend had a cork leg," concluded the old salt.
한 은퇴 선원이 끝없는 바다 모험 이야기를 하고 있었다. 이번에는 그의 친구에 관한 것이었다.
"이 친구는 돛단배의 요리사였어. 어느 날 그가 탄 배가 심하게 난파당해 야만적인 식인종 무리가 지배하고 있는 어느 섬에 좌초하였어. 식인종들이 축제를 준비하고 있을 때 그가 추장에게 말했지: '내 생각엔 날 잡아먹으려고 하는 모양이지만 당신들은 나를 싫어할 거야' 하고 그가 엄숙하게 말했지. 그는 주머니칼을 꺼내어 자기 다리 종아리를 얇게 잘라내어서 추장에게 건넸어. '자 먹어보고, 당신이 판단해,' 하고 그가 다그쳤지. 추장이 한 입 먹어보더니, 투덜거리며 뱉어내고, '오늘 저녁 식사는 끝이야!' 하고 그가 명령하더라고."
"내 친구는 코르크 의족을 달고 있었던 거야," 하고 그 은퇴 선원은 끝을 맺었다.
