Ed and Ted met for the first time in twenty years.
"So, how's life been for you?" Ed asked.
"Not too good," Ted replied. "My first wife died of cancer, my second wife turned out to be a lesbian and ran off with another woman and took all our savings, my son's in prison for trying to kill me, my daughter got run over by a bus, my house was hit by a low-flying aircraft, my vintage car rolled off the dockside into the sea, I had to have my dog put down recently, my doctor says that I have an incurable disease and to cap it all my business has just gone bust."
"Shit, that sounds terrible." Ed said. "What business were you in?"
"I sell good luck charms," said Ted.
에드와 테드는 20년 만에 처음으로 만났다.
"그래, 너 어떻게 지냈어?" 하고 에드가 물었다.
"별로 좋지 못해," 하고 테드가 대답하였다, "내 첫 마누라는 암으로 죽었고, 내 두 번째 마누라는 레즈비언으로 밝혀졌는데 우리가 모아둔 돈을 모두 갖고 다른 여자와 같이 도주하였고, 내 아들은 나를 죽이려 하다가 교도소에 가 있고, 내 딸은 버스에 치였고, 내 집은 낮게 날던 비행기에 부딪혔고, 내 고물차는 부둣가에서 굴러내려 바다에 빠졌고, 최근에는 내 개를 안락사시켜야 했고, 내 의사는 내가 불치의 병에 걸렸다고 말했고, 설상가상으로 내 사업은 파산했어."
"저런, 아주 끔찍한 소리를 하는군," 하고 에드가 말했다, "너는 어떤 일을 하고 있었어?"
"난 행운을 가져다주는 부적을 팔았어," 하고 테드가 말했다.
