A burglar, needing money to pay his income taxes, decided to burgle the safe in a store. On the safe door he was very pleased to find a note reading: "Please don't use dynamite. The safe is not locked. Just turn the knob."
He did so. Instantly a heavy sandbag fell on him, the entire premises were floodlighted, and alarms started clanging.
As the police carried him out on a stretcher, he was heard moaning, "My confidence in human nature has been rudely shaken."
자기의 소득세를 내기 위하여 돈이 필요한 어느 강도가 한 가게의 금고를 털기로 결심하였다. 그는 그 금고의 문짝에 다음과 같은 쪽지가 붙어 있는 걸 발견하고 무척 기뻐했다: "제발 다이너마이트를 사용하지 마세요. 금고는 잠기지 않았습니다. 그냥 손잡이를 돌리세요."
그는 그렇게 하였다. 즉시 무거운 샌드백이 그에게 떨어졌고, 가게 전체에 투광 조명등이 켜지고 경보음이 울리기 시작했다.
경찰관이 그를 들것으로 옮기고 있을 때 그가 한탄하는 소리가 들리었다, "인간성에 대한 나의 신뢰가 완전히 흔들렸어."
