An avid duck hunter was in the market for a new bird dog. His search ended when he found a dog that could actually walk on water to retrieve a duck.
Shocked by his find, he was sure none of his friends would ever believe him.
He decided to try to break the news to a friend of his, the eternal pessimist who refused to be impressed with anything. This, surely, would impress him.
He invited him to hunt with him and his new dog.
As they waited by the shore, a flock of ducks flew by. they fired, and a duck fell. The dog responded and jumped into the water.
The dog, however, did not sink but instead walked across the water to retrieve the bird, never getting more than his paws wet.
This continued all day long; each time a duck fell, the dog walked across the surface of the water to retrieve it.
The pessimist watched carefully, saw everything, but did not say a single word.
On the drive home the hunter asked his friend, "Did you notice anything unusual about my new dog?"
"I sure did," responded the pessimist. "He can't swim."
오리 사냥을 몹시 좋아하는 한 사냥꾼이 새 사냥개를 새로 사기 위해 시장에 갔다. 그는 오리를 회수하러 실제로 물 위를 걸을 수 있는 개를 발견하고 다른 건 더 이상 찾을 필요가 없었다.
그 개의 발견에 흥분한 그는 자기 친구들 중 아무도 자기를 믿지 않을 것이라고 확신했다.
그는 무엇에 대해서도 감동되기를 거부하는 영원한 비관론자인 그의 친구에게 그 소식을 알려줘야겠다고 생각했다. 이건, 틀림없이, 그를 감동시킬 거야.
그는 그와 그의 개가 함께 사냥 가는데 그 친구를 초청하였다.
그들이 바닷가에서 기다리고 있을 때, 오리 때가 그들 옆을 날아갔다. 그들은 총을 발사하였고 오리 한 마리가 떨어졌다. 그러자 개가 반응하여 물속으로 뛰어들었다.
하지만 개는 가라앉지 않고 그 대신 오리를 회수하기 위하여 물 위를 걸었는데 발만 물에 젖을 뿐이었다.
이런 일이 하루 종일 계속되었다; 오리가 떨어질 때마다 개는 오리를 회수하기 위하여 물의 표면을 걸어갔다.
그 비관론자는 주의 깊게 관찰하고 모든 걸 보았지만 한 마디도 말하지 않았다.
집으로 차를 몰고 돌아가는 길에 사냥꾼이 그의 친구에게 물었다, "내가 새로 구한 그 사냥개에 대해 무슨 특별한 점을 못 봤어?"
"분명히 봤어," 하고 그 비관론자가 대답하였다, "개가 헤엄을 못 치더군"
