God created the donkey & said to him: "You will work unceasingly from sunrise to sunset carrying burdens on your back. You will eat grass, you will have no intelligence & you will live 50 years. You will be a donkey."
The donkey answered: "I will be a donkey, but to live 50 years is too much. Give me only 20 years." God granted his wish.
God created the dog and said to him: "You will be a dog. You will guard the house of man. You will be his best friend. You will eat the scraps that he gives you and you will live 25 years. You will be a dog."
The dog answered: "Master, to live 25 years is too much, you give me only 10 years." God granted his wish.
God created the Monkey and said to him: "You will be a monkey. You will swing from branch to branch doing tricks. You will be amusing and you will live 20 years. You will be a monkey."
The monkey answered: "Master to live 20 years is too much, you give me only 10 years." God granted his wish.
Finally God created the man and said to him: "You will be a man, the only rational creature on the face of the earth. You will use your intelligence to become master over all animals. You will dominate the world and you will live 20 years."
Man responded: "I will be a man but to live only 20 years is very little, give the 30 years that the donkey refused, the 15 years that the dog did not want and the 10 years the monkey refused." God granted his wish.
And since then, man lives 20 years as a man, he marries and spends 30 years like a donkey, working and carrying all the burdens on his back.
Then when his children are gone, he lives 15 years like a dog, taking care of the house and eating whatever is given to him, so that when he is old, he can retire and live 10 years like a monkey, going from house to house, from one son or daughter to another, doing tricks to amuse his grandchildren.
하느님이 당나귀를 창조하시고 그에게 말씀하셨다: "너는 해 뜰때부터 해 질 때까지 끊임없이 등에 짐을 지고 일할 것이니라. 너는 풀을 먹고 지혜가 없으며 50세까지 살 것이니라. 너는 당나귀가 될 것이니라"
당나귀가 대답했다: "저는 당나귀가 되겠습니다, 그러나 50년을 산다는 것은 너무 깁니다. 저에게 20년만 주십시오." 하느님은 그의 소원을 들어주셨다.
하느님이 개를 창조하시고 그에게 말씀하셨다: "너는 개이니라. 너는 인간의 집을 지킬 것이니라. 너는 인간의 가장 가까운 친구이니라. 너는 인간이 너에게 주는 음식 찌꺼기를 먹고 25년을 살게 될 것이니라."
개가 대답했다: "주인님, 25년을 산다는 건 너무 깁니다. 저에게 10년만 주십시오." 하느님은 그의 소원을 들어주셨다.
하느님은 원숭이를 창조하시고 그에게 말씀하였다: "너는 원숭이이니라. 너는 재주를 부려가며 이 나뭇가지에서 저 나뭇가지로 건너뛰게 될 것이니라. 너는 즐겁게 살 것이고 20년을 살게 될 것이니라. 너는 원숭이이니라."
원숭이가 대답했다: "주인님, 20년을 산다는 것은 너무 깁니다. 저에게 10년만 주십시오." 하느님은 그의 소원을 들어주셨다.
드디어 하느님은 인간을 창조하시고 그에게 말씀하셨다: "너는 인간이니라, 너는 땅 위에 사는 유일한 이성적인 창조물이니라. 너는 네가 가진 지혜를 사용하여 모든 동물의 주인이 될 것이니라. 너는 세상을 지배할 것이며 20년을 살게 될 것이니라."
사람이 대답했다: "저는 인간이 되겠습니다. 그러나 단 20년은 너무 짧습니다. 당나귀가 거절한 30년과 개가 원하지 않은 15년과 원숭이가 거절한 10년을 저에게 주십시오." 하느님은 그의 소원을 들어주셨다.
그리고 그때부터 사람은 20년간은 사람으로 살고, 30년간은 결혼해서 일하면서 당나귀처럼 등에 짐을 지고 살아간다. 그리고 나서는 아이들이 떠나가고 집을 지키며, 그에게 주어지는 걸 받아먹으며 15년간을 개처럼 살아간다. 그리고 늙고 은퇴하게 되면 아들 집, 딸 집으로 이집 저집 옮겨다니며 손자 손녀들을 즐겁게 하기 위하여 재주를 부리며 원숭이처럼 10년을 살아간다.
