A fifth generation farmer has determined that his son will be the first in their family to go to college.
So he and the wife save every penny for years and when the big day comes for junior to leave for school, the old man is the proudest he's ever been.
After the first semester junior comes home for Christmas break and the old man sits him down for a talk. "Well, boy, you been at school for three months now, I want you to tell me some of that fancy book learnin'."
So junior says, "My favorite class is math, pa. Just last week we learned a new formula... Pi r squared."
At hearing this the old man screws up his eyes and smacks his forehead, "Dog gone-it! I spent all that money on schooling and all you can tell me is Pi r squared? Why everybody know pies are round... CORNBREAD is squared!"
5대째 농사를 짓고 있는 어느 농부가 자기의 아들을 그들 집안에서 처음으로 대학에 보내기로 결심하였다.
그래서 농부와 아내는 수년간 모든 돈을 저축하였다, 그리고 마침내 아들이 대학을 가기 위하여 집을 떠나는 날이 왔다, 그 늙은이는 일찍이 가져보지 못한 자부심을 갖게 되었다.
첫 학기가 끝나고 아들은 크리스마스 방학을 맞아 집으로 돌아왔다, 그리고 늙은이는 이야기하려고 아들을 앉혔다. "음, 아들아, 네가 대학 간 지도 이제 3달이 되었구나, 네가 책에서 배운 값진 학문에 대해 좀 말해다오."
그래서 아들이 말했다, "제가 좋아하는 과목은 수학입니다, 아버지. 바로 지난주에 우리들은 새 공식... 파이 아르 스퀘어드(파이 곱하기 반지름 제곱)를 배웠습니다."
이 말을 듣자 늙은이는 눈을 찌푸리고 자기 이마를 때렸다, "제기랄! 난 많은 돈을 써서 널 공부시켰는데 네가 나에게 말한 것이라고는 "pie are squared"라고? 나 참, 모두들 파이는 둥글고... 옥수수 식빵은 네모졌다는 걸 알고 있는데 말이야!"
