A young ensign had nearly completed his first overseas tour of sea duty when he was given an opportunity to display his ability at getting the ship under way.
With a stream of crisp commands, he had the decks buzzing with men. Soon the ship had left port and was streaming out of the channel.
The ensign's efficiency has been remarkable. In fact, the deck was abuzz with talk that he had set a new record for getting a destroyer under way.
The ensign glowed at his accomplishment and was not all surprised when another seaman approached him with a message from the captain. He was, however, a bit surprised to find that it was a radio message, and he was even more surprised when he read,
"My personal congratulations upon completing your underway preparation exercise, according to the book, and with amazing speed. In your haste, however, you have overlooked one of the unwritten rules. Make sure the captain is aboard before getting under way."

소위는 그의 업적에 고무되어 다른 한 선원이 함장의 메시지를 갖고 다가왔을 때 전혀 놀라지 않았다. 그러나 그는 그게 무선으로 보내온 메시지란 걸 발견하고는 놀랐다, 그리고 그를 더욱더 놀라게 한 것은 다음과 같은 내용이었다:
"기록에 의하면, 귀관은 놀라운 속도로, 출항 준비 훈련을 성공시킨 데 대하여 본관의 개인적인 축하를 보낸다. 하지만 귀관은 너무 서두르다가 불문율의 하나를 간과하였다. 출항 전에 함장이 탑승하였는지를 꼭 확인하라."
